18GB 10k SCSI vs 120GB WD SE . basically what are your experiences with WD? [scsi drive] [maxtor]

admin / November 15th, 2010/ Posted in Hardware / No Comments »

Q: Well my dads computer had the unfortunately luck of having me put a 10k 9GB SCSI disk drive is the OS a few years ago, and the slow dog ever since.

I am very interested in having him instead use my 18GB SCSI disk. I will continue with my “storage” drive, a 120GB WD SE as my main and only drive.

I was interested in feedback on how my system would perform with this change.

The is a 10,000 rpm Ultra160 10kII drive.

Thanks

I would place the 10K-II slightly below performance of a WD SATA Raptor. FYI, try defragging a lot. For some reason, SCSI loves been fragmented.

What about a 10K-III drive compared to Raptor?

It will be better, but you can get a used 15.3k from newegg for less than $200. Or you can splurge and get an atlas iV 15k

For what it's worth, I'd stick with the western digital all together. I have an 18gb ultrastar 10k rpm with my operating system on it. I also have the wd 120gb se as my storage drive. In the benchmarks, the wd kills the scsi every time. Unless your is way newer than mine, the current IDE drives are faster for home computing. It's depressing :( I love my scsi.

You know what? I'm still using my IBM 10KRPM drive as a boot drive and it is much faster than the 8MB WD on my other rage. :)

It is a Shttulte kt266A-based mobo (ak35 or something)

HD: 9GB 10k Seagate
SCSI Card: Advansys Controller
RAM: 512MB

1) this thing is as loud as hell
2) It takes forever to load windows and just about any programs

I was thinking about replacing the controller with my own PC's ADaptec 19160..

Maybe I'll just mess around with his drive right now. I'd hate to have to go through so much work for something so simple.

Doesn't SCSI take awhile to boot? I personally just stuck with IDE 8 mb HDDs because they didn't have to detect with every bootup. You're not going to notice a big difference unless you're doing something with a lot of HDD access anyway.

Thanks.

I meant that any intensive HD activity is dog-slow. Also, I meant Loading windows..i.e….by then the SCSI drivers have kicked in.
