2 cable modems on one line – possible and how? [instant messenging] [cable modems]
Q: Ok, my service contract lets me two IP addresses. So, I have been here 2 cable modems. The cable is pretty crappy here – when I play CS nobody else can use internet at all in the house – even instant can not get enough bandwidth. So I thought I would own my cable modem and have my own dedicated IP address.
What me want to do:
Be connected to the internet on my cable modem
Be able to the small network, I also support a gateway.

Yeah, wish it was like that. If I download a file and manage 100KB/sec, or if I play CS on a server and get under 80ms pingtime, that's pretty much all of the bandwidth we've got coming in here. I'm about 13 miles too far out of range to get DSL, and there's no other cable providers in the area. I'll be moving out sometime in the next few months probably:(….hopefully to somewhere with good Internet.

Good luck… the extra modem would only work if you had two accounts, not ip's…

Re:You're still not being clear. Are you saying that you're having TWO separate cable lines coming into your place? Cuz that's the only way you'll be able to use two modems.

Yeah, we have considered going back to dialup, but, well, when the cable does work right, it is really pretty good. Plus, we like being able to use the Internet without having to check with anyone else before dialing in, plus we only have one phone line. Staying with cable Internet is actually cheaper than having a second line and paying for dialup service.
I live pretty far from just about anything; I should just be glad we have ANY broadband options out here.

Re:I think you've misunderstood your cable company, they're giving you two IP addresses, not another connection. You first modem most likely is authenticated by mac address, you you can plug a second modem in, but its not going to give you another connection with out you paying an additional $xx.xx a month for service.
Two modems isn't what you want, you want a high bandwidth package or a new service is playing CS is that intensive. I've used IM programs/IRC while playing CS on dialup, so you might as well go back to dialup if its that bad.
