3DMark 2003 blocks both my machines? [athlon xp 1600] [athlon xp 1700]

Q: Machine 1
Epox 8RDA 977 503 @ 157 FSB (also tried it on stock speeds), 512MB PC2100 DDR
GeForce4 Ti4200
Mushkin RAM

Machine 2
ECS K7S5A
Athlon 1700
Radeon 8500LE
256mb DDR XP machines PC2100

Both lock up at some point during the 3DMark 2003 demo, sound plays still, but graphics stop. CTL-Alt-Del does nothing. I tried closing all background programs. DirectX 9.0 installed on both machines. All the latest drivers installed for the MB and vid card. What is going on here. Machine 2 made it through the benchmark with a score less than 998, have not tried the benchmark on the machine 1.

Reading some other posts Im not sure if I have DirectX 9.0 installed. Is this the problem?

Re:I'm using Athlon MP 1900's, 512MB PC2100 reg. ecc, and a Radeon 9700 pro. I got 4338, but there were points where I was getting less than 10 FPS, and once during the scene where the girl using the sword is fighting the two trolls, the FPS dropped down to 1. That's crazy. Maybe in about a year or two.. or three from now, people will be able to run this thing smoothly.

Re:Yes, I agree. If it chokes bad on a AthlonXP 1700 and Geforce4 Ti4200 what good is it? Are we all supposed to go out and buy a Radeon 9700 and the fastest processor on the market so we can get decent framerate on the demo? I don't think so!! Oh well, nice eye candy if it would work correctly. Hopefully a patch is forthcoming…..

Re:I can run the benchmark OK (well, slowly but stably), but the FPS-style demo just shows the entire screen flashing random colors, while the audio plays. I remain a little confused as to why 3DMark2003 is SO demanding when it does not look that great (particularly the troll portion).

Re:I don't have any problem running the benchmark. It just kicks me back to desktop everytime I run a demo.

Re:My current games (Hitman 2, NFS Hot Pursuit 2, etc.) and 3DMark 2001 run great at 2.9 GHz, but I had to back it down to 2.86 to run 3DMark03, and had to back the GF4 down to 305 on the core to run this benchmark without crashing to the desktop and without pauses in the benchmark due to the video card being overclocked too far. A VERY demanding benchmark.

Re:Computer ran Dronezmark all night without a hitch, must be a bug in 3DMark2003 like guy said.

I also see that 3DMark 2001 won't run now, it gives me an error message that DirectX 8.1 is required. I wonder if they have a patch to make it work with DirectX 9.0??

Re:Hey

Mine kicks me back to the desktop right when the second demo starts. Check the www.futuremark.com forum. Seems like 90% of people are having the same problem. It's a bug in 3Dmark03. I think they will fix it pretty soon though.

BTW, did you like the new 3Dmark03? I didn't like that much… It didn't impress me like the 3Dmark2001 did. :-/

Re:Same mobo, 1900+, R8500 retail, 512 meg = 1020. Sigh!

Upgrade time AGAIN?

Re:I have tested both machines extensively before for stability. 3DMark2001 will run for days on either machine.

Re:DX9 is not the problem. Maybe you need to test them for stability?
