How I get that file into something useful?

Best Answer: an ACE file i s an archive like a ZIP file – meaning, it contains other files inside of it that are compressed.
if you really want to delete it try MoveOnBoot (free)

In my eager to open this file I yesterday renamed the file to .zip
But now it will not allow me to rename it back into .ace ????????

It says that the file is corrupt ??? maybe it is??

Re:".ace" is a compressed file format, just like ".zip". To decompress it, you need to download and install the latest WinAce.
