athlon xp1600 + vs T-Bird 1.4 is worth the 1600 + of my T-Bird [lmk] [tbird]
Q: Check it out, I have a 1.4 TBIRD and im looking for the XP-series . “Finally” and im kinda low on cash, so I was wound ring can I get xp for about $ 30 + uh, is it worth making the switch to xp. LMK and tell me the differences . THANKS
Re:I ran a 1600+ on a K7S5A v1.0 at 150×10.5 for 18 months at stock vcore. While neither are know as great clockers, they do make a good pair, and it is a defenate improvement over the 1400 tbird (normally to hot). Later I placed that Paly on a Nforce 2 and got 166×10.5 (1750mhz) at 1.7vcore and 166×11 (1833mhz) at 1.75vcore. I also placed my current 2600+ on the K7S5A and yes it ran very, very good. I upgraded to this NF2 (shuttle AN 35 Ultra), and only got a 5% boost in performance over the SIS. And yes my 2600+ is a dud, and does not overclock worth a $hit.
Re:heh maybe unlocking it would be kinda fun. maybe i want to try it on my 1700 palo….
then again, maybe not
Re:1600+ won't really OC. Maybe from 1.40 to 1.60 or just a bit more tops (1900+). But it's a palomino and it won't go high. If you run the fsb at 150, that's 150 * 10.5 = 1575. Risky, possibly doable, but I wouldn't count on the overclock too much.
If you have FSB's between 133 and 150 those could be worth trying, but I really don't recommend overclocking the bus since your PCI and AGP will go off, and that could be dangerous.
Basically, you'll want to go over the Palomino XP benchmarks when first released. The main advantages are a cooler core (less electricity used too), SSE enhancements, and a smart prefetch to put more valuable data in L2 cache.
Re:2600+ highest this board will support.. one of those bad boys would be nice, but maybe some other time….

i got a ECS K7S5A, and it only supports fsb up to 150, 166 will not post… kinda strange… but all in all a pretty good board. How high will I be able to go with the 1600+ on this board?
The K7S5A likes the XP better (but if you have no problems with your t-bird then that's not an issue). Not sure if the barton will even run on that board.

the broad is not known for good OCing. it also depends on the RAM and the HSF. retail hsf is crap

Re:there would be noticable speed gain but if its worth it or not it's up to you
if im you… still not really. maybe even sell the DDR and save for a major price drop for the bartons
Re:xp seems to run cooler than the T-bird. The 1600+ is also a known clocker. Most will run a 2100+ speeds with no extra cooling.
Re:IMO not really unless you got DDR
Re:it's faster. but not by much. so it depends, do you want to each lunch 3 times or do you want a marginally faster processor
