ATOT Coders: What are the specs of the code on your rig? [smidgen] [correct location]
Q: My computer gets a smidge dated and I am looking for a new class usually (CS major). Everyone code on a mac?
Ive been told to get a laptop, but encryption on a laptop sounds more like punishment.
If this does not belong in ATOT, please kindly to the correct location.

Re:Both home and work PCs are running P4 (home 2.4, work 3.2) with 2GB of ram. Coding doesn't really require good hardware as long as you're not working on something extreme. Amount of RAM would be the only concert since most IDEs are memory hogs and you will need to have a lot of windows open.

a guy in my class writes his code on a mac and then recompiles it in a windows virtual machine before he hands it in.
edit: I have a dell laptop. I was really against having one until about October when I realised how convienent it would be for school. Now that I have it, I would not want to be without it. Its so fantastic having my projects with me all the time and being able to program anywhere. At home I use a normal keyboard and mouse and I'm looking into getting a proper LCD monitor too.

I do SQL Server 2005/ASP.NET/C# development and having two different boxes is quite handy. I also have add'l displays connected sometimes (depending on whether I'm at home, at work, or at the gf's house).

Re:I coded on my non-widescreen 15" laptop for a while. It was really convenient to be able to take my computer into the computer labs, where I could also use one of the school's workstations along with my laptop. If you don't like the laptop keyboard for coding, you can just plug in a full sized keyboard, and even a regular monitor.
If your school doesn't use Visual Studio, then a Mac would be fine. My school had us use Vim and gcc on really old Solaris boxes, so the Mac OS X terminal close enough on the few times where I coded on a Mac at work.

Widescreen is cool for coding too, I was in denial about it, but widescreen lets you have multiple tabs, or code+ debug window in parallel.

Coding on either is pretty much the same. Only situation where the difference is noticeable is when I have to run the full Oracle Application Server locally instead of the slimmer OC4J. That's more of a memory thing, though, because my PM 1.5GHz, 2GB memory laptop can run Oracle AS better than the work desktop.
I'd say spend the most money on the monitor. Lots of memory is only needed if you need to run heavy duty server or VM software. Any modern CPU is fine.
Re:At work I have a P4 desktop with 1 gig of RAM. I'm getting a Core 2 Duo laptop with 2 gigs of RAM on Monday though.
At school I use my laptop (1.4 ghz Celeron M with 1 gig of RAM), but I code on a remote server over ssh so it doesn't really matter.
You'll be able to get by though on whatever machine you have though. It's not like you're going to be programming any computationally intensive apps for assignments. If you are though, they usually have a sandbox available to do it on.

That way you have dual screens in your room, and a nice keyboard, but you still have the portability of a laptop when required.
Laptops nowadays are pretty nice, with their Core 2 Duo processors and a gig or two of RAM.
Re:My work PC that I code on is a Precision M90. 1.66 Core2Duo, a gig of ram, and an nvidia quadro FX 1500 video card. Actually when I think about it, 95% of my coding right now takes place on remote servers for clients.

Re:I use a laptop at work for software development. Personally I don't think it's the best choice because of the screen. 1280×768 is not great for working in various development tools, and higher resolution is hard on the eyes. on the other hand, we do go mobile within the building quite often. large screen is definitely a plus. doing anything on my 24" at home is a pleasure.
spec wise, I don't find the CPU too important as long as it's moderately modern, but definitely get at least a gig of ram
