Batch help – Installing programs [batch file] [parameters]

admin / October 18th, 2010/ Posted in Software / No Comments »

Q: I have seven programs I find myself reinstalling over and over. Is there a way to make a for them? Some of the information required to be entered, others do not. I can set for auto-fill-in those parts? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Best Answer: You can write batch files to clean up your computer, yes, but not all the files that you would like to get rid of will be available for deleting because some of them will be in use. Such files include index.dat files. If you want to delete these, you either have to use a program that can clean them (usually on restart) or add a command (or commands) to your autoexec.bat file to delete them as the computer starts up.

Simpler is to use a free program like Ccleaner and/or the inbuilt deletion tools. http://ccleaner.com Ccleaner will delete index.dat files as the computer starts up.

If you want to do it yourself, the "temp" and "temporary internet files" folders for each user need to be emptied. Also, MRU lists (Most Recently Used) should be deleted. That can be a big one to deal with because they can be found in the Documents menu and inside programs such as Microsoft Word, Paint, etc. I think dealing with MRUs means dealing with the registry.

It depends in part on what you are trying to deal with and why. I suggest you at least download and install something like Ccleaner to see what things are dealt with – one reason for deleting a lot of the information that gets deleted is to stop the information being harvested.

Hope that is some help.

Re:used to be another program around like that called installrite or something like that…might wanna look at that too

Re:Altiris rapidinstall works to build a single .exe file for all changes. You would build a baseline, install the apps, run the delta and get the .exe file. This is OS specific for most programs, but works. I think that they have a timed demo available for download, it's bundled with thier imaging stuff.

Re:VNC, Adobe, Nero, Voloview, eTrust, Citrix

Re:what are the programs if I may ask??? It would help if you listed them so that we can see if maybe there are arguments that can be added via the command line.

Re:Not sure how to do it with an already installed OS, but here is a link to make a slipstream XP CD, that can install commonly used programs.
