Best modem for gaming (cstrike) [us robotics v92] [ping rates]
Q: Sorry if this is off topic, but I have some useful advice for a friend who plays on my server . He gets high ping rates on time . 400 + and the question is? Does anyone know if a modem is better and stronger than his Aopen 56K . Perhaps a U.S. Robotics V92 will give him a better ping rates . he lives about 6-8 miles away from me and has no access to the various cable or DSL where he lives. He is an avid gamer and never gets less than 160 AOL dish he tried for quick access, but forget it is not better than 56K are in fact terrible. His machine is the speed with a 1.3 Gig AMD A7V266 motherboard and more than 256 mgs of RAM . at a loss for my friend

Re:chances are his local phone company's isp would be better. AOL is usually horribly lagged, and I don't know if this matters or not, but they don't even use the native windows tcp/ip stack, it installs its own goofy setup.
by far the best modem ever made is the USR Courier V. Everything. I thought I had a nice 56k modem until I broke down and got one of these puppies on ebay for 52 dollars. Upped my connect speed from 38k to 46.6 and lowered my pings about 25ms on average. It owns for a dialup.

goto SpeedGuide (http://www.speedguide.net) and dload a patch to update you setting for optimals speed. There is also a TCP/IP analyzer that can give you some info about your connection

Re:there is a chance that he would be better off but no guarantees. you also have to take into effect the phone lines. if the phone lines in his house are older its going to be slower conenections

Re:i was getting pings around 150 with my US Robotics 56k Fax Modem. it all depends on teh ISP though. is he using AOL? i used to try playing with AOL but pings were terrible
