Can not boot from Norton Ghost 2003 [ms dos mode] [norton ghost 2003]

Q: I have been struggling to backup my HD to my external hard drive (connected via USB 2) I successfully back in February, but now I have a solution for the forgotten hangs during boot. I tried to boot from the floppy I made to boot in MS-DOS mode, but it depends. Everyone knows how to untangle this. I give all requested information on what Im trying.

Best Answer: If I'm honest, it sounds like you have a failed drive. Any time a disk of any sort gives out a "Dive not formatted" error when you're sure that the drive has previously been formatted, you're looking at some major trouble.

It is possible that any number of things could have happened. While handling it, did you observe proper guidelines for handling electrostatic sensitive equipment? Did the drive come in contact with any magnetic interference, or was subjected to anything magnetic? Did you drop or damage the drive? If you're sure that you've done the following correctly, you may as well check to make sure that the plugs on the drive and on the usb enclosure are making good contact with the drive and also making sure the drive is receiving ample power (some USB enclosures for 2.5" laptop drives don't have a power jack and simply draw power from the USB port to run the drive. If you can power the drive using an external AC adapter, give that a shot).

If all else fails, try giving the drive power and just listen very closely to it, to make sure it's spooling properly. It very well could be that the drive itself has failed outright. If this is the case, the drive's data may still be intact, but you will need a professional to restore the data.

Re:I am trying to backup. I don't know how but I know there is a way.

Re:I am confused.

Are you trying to BACKUP (Clone) or RESTORE?

Re::oI gave up and ordered Backupmycomputer only to read user reviews that said it was useless and no support at all. The reviews for Ghost 2003 are mostly favorable and say only you must read the manual. I guess I'm too dumb to find the magic key there. I'll just have to give up the idea of making backups of my hard drive since no one here seems to know the key either. I wanted to back it up so I could play with overclocking it since I have had bad crashes requiring reformatting the Hard drive before during this peocess.

Re:I found my disk but I have the same problems. I am now thinking that it is caused by using a file name that exceeds the 9 character limet for DOS. I am using a nsme of "Ghost Backup 5-29-06". That is how the file was named on the one backup that worked but I think that there must be a procedure to get a short DOS filename for the boot process. Otherwise my boot disk is corrupt. I'll format it and make a new one first.

Re:I tried to find those files but couldn't. I tried deleting the Ghost 2003 feature from my Norton SystemWorks files and did get rid of my existing program. I intended to reinstall from my Systemworks disk but, don't you know, I have lost the disk. Looks like I'll have to start the whole thing over if I can find another copy. I tried using the Norton restore feature from the wastebasket but Ghost didn't properly link to Win XP. Now I've got a bunch of extra files somewhere and can't even find those.:frown:

Re:Have you try booting with your bootdisk and typing the
ghreboot command?

You may also want to check the floppy for the "Ghosterr.txt"
to see if you can get any clues from it.

Re:I tried by eliminating OTHER BOOT DEVCES but that didn't work. Same problem. When I'm booting I get as far as the drivers for firewire and USB and the thing hangs. When I tried to use the advanced feature of running ghost interactively from DOS, it went one line further and hung but I could press ctl-alt-del and it would reboot and go to the same place. When I use the normal backup routine I have to prss the reset button to reboot. In either case I have to use option 2 to revert to a normal Windows boot and then I get a window that says the backup failed and there is a small corrupt file on the external hard drive with the name I gave for the destination file. I hope smeone knows how to break this.

Re:Try this:

Go into your bios and be sure the "boot from usb" is Disabled
