Can not load program in W2K – SP3 [kodak camera] [usb drivers]
Q: I tried to load the USB drivers for my Kodak camera and can not. I have done many times before on other computers without problems. The procedure is as follows:
1. Place the camera software. (From the CD that came with the camera)
2. Reboot
3. Run the self extracting W2K USB driver program. (A separate program to download Kodak)
4. Plug in the camera run “found new hardware”
5. Done
I have done this many times on other computers (Ive had this camera a few years), and it has always run flawlessly. Here is what is happening:
1. Place the camera software.
2. Reboot
3. Run the self extracting W2K USB driver program.
Here is where the problem lies. When I run, extracts the files and then starts the installation procedure as usual. Then a window appears that says “Are you sure you want to un-install the camera software”! : Confused: i / expressions / rolleye.gif If I click No, it closes the program. If I click YES, the UN-install the camera software that I loaded in step 1.
I called Kodak 800-number for tech help, and am very friendly to help, but unfortunately he could not, either. Any suggestions that he had, I had already tried with no luck. Neither one of us can figure out how to install the USB program is popping up an un-install window, the camera software. Any idea ? THANKS !
Best Answer: ok – one way – you will need the original w2k disk, or you could use a recovery console,
just use the commands FIXBOOT and FIXMBR, this will put ntldr (w2k bootloader) back in your mbr, but the downside is it will remove grub and so make Jolicloud unbootable,
2nd way – as Jolicloud is based on ubuntu you will/may have /boot/grub/menu.lst (lst = list not first) – you can edit this file to point to w2k only,
then you can remove w7 – either by right click 'my computer' and choose manage > disk management and deleting the partition,
or,
assuming that Jolicloud has ntfs-3g, use nautilus (or whatever file manager) to find the w7 partition and use the disk manager to delete the partition,
or,
just throw the towel in and format your drive and install a real operating system – mandriva linux

go for this download if you do

(it runs fine on my dell lappy)

Re:Thanks for the replies. I have tried installing the driver first (even though the directions say not to–I am willing to try anything!!!), but it did not work. And yes I am logged in as Administrator (it doesn?t hurt to ask though
I tried again today to un-install and clean the registry and re-install — still the same. This is really driving me nuts, I have done this a hundred times on at least three different computers with absolutely no problems at all. I still can't figure how running a driver INSTALL program is making a UN-INSTALL window pop up for a different (although related) software program. :disgust:
Any other ideas?? Thanks for the help so far.

Re:I may have misunderstood all you have done, but have you tried installing the driver program first, and then the software? I know that is how I have to install my USB WinTV.. driver first then software.

Re:I do not know if this will help, but Microsoft acknowledges there is an "issue" with SP3 and the Windows Installer 2.0.
I had several problems with SP3, and ultimately formatted my HDD and reinstalled the works. This time I am following the old New England advice about Service Packs: If it aint broke, don't fix it. So far, with NO Service Packs, I cannot remember my machine working as well. Go figure. Anyhow, the tech walked me through the following procedure:
1. Download the installer 2.0 from Microsoft.
2. Do the following:
From Safemode/Command Prompt, run the following command:
msiexec /unregister
Then, in C:\WINNT\System 32 Rename the Msi.dll, Msiexec.exe, and Msihnd.dll files.
Check for DLLCACHE folder, and if it is there, rename the same files as well. rename these files from the command prompt.
Restart Windows, run the Instmsiw.exe program to install and register the engine files again.

Re:Thanks for the reply. That is what I thought also, but I have tried completely removing the program and registry entries (I think I got them all) and reinstalling it, no luck.
As far as the need of the program, this camera software was not originally made for Win2000, so Kodak came up with a "add-on" Win2000 driver to make it work — and it has — flawlessly every time I have used it in the past. But for some reason I can't get it to load this time, it just wants to remove the original program. I even let it unload the original program and tried reloading it, no luck.
Thanks for the bump!!

Re:have you tried removing the program from Control Panel, or hunting down the registry references and deleting them? Seems like this type of error often results from a double-installation or incomplete uninstall.
Curious: why do you have to install a USB driver to 2K anyway? My Olympus USB just plugs in with MS driver support..
Anyway – a good luck bump.
