Can you use a mobile P4 in a desktop computer? [dell dimension 8200] [dell dimension]
Q: I found a P4 3.06 SL7NA mobile processor on ebay for what I think is cheap and I was wondering if I could use this processor in a desktop computer with me or not. It is a Dell Dimension 8200 with an 850E chipset, so it supports the 533MHz FSB. I must respond with in 7 hours from this post otherwise the auction will end. Im excited to buy this processor because the processor is designed for the desktop, ebay is now 4x the price of it .

There are others but you can search for them.

BTW who in the right mind will buy any prescott-based laptops?
Prescott laptops are cheaper than Dothan/Banias laptops. People on budgets or People who see 3.2 GHz and ignorantly think it is faster than the more expensive 2GHz Pentium M buy them.

If I remember correctly, there are some adapters that can work for this, but to be honest, I don't remember much more than that. We deal mainly with AMD stuff at the moment and I'll be the first to admit my Intel knowledge has suffered for it
ASUS makes an adapter (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/pentiumm-780.html) that works with certain ASUS motherboards. DFI and AOpen make specialty motherboards just for mobile processors in a desktop. If my memory serves me correct, Shuttle has a SFF for Pentium M.
AMD Moble Chips in Socket 754 will work on any ASUS Desktop motherboard. It is also rumored that they work in DFI Micro ATX but I cannot confirm that.
Newegg.com has only two models and not all Pentium M boards are represented here. DFI makes them too.

Lol, ESPECIALLY one that is on socket 478! At least LGA 775 prescott is been refined a bit but it'd still be god awfully stupid to do so..

If I remember it right, there is a problem wherein if a P4-M is used on a non mobile designed mobo it will default to 400FSB and some sort of lower multiplier, thus neutering the cpu. But there is a work around but can't locate it now. So do a google or check the CPU/Processor or mobo section forum.
Yep, guy is right. While you can get a mobile P4 to work in a desktop board(some work better than others, you might need to do a pin mod to get the correct voltage, and some boards won't boot with it anyway), it will default to a 12x multiplier, and you can't raise it. You would have to overclock the FSB to 255mhz just to get the chip to run at it's stock speed..
EDIT: Also, that specific chip is Prescott based, so it won't work with the 850E chipset motherboard anyway.
Ok thanks. ;P

Re:I see that there are three versions of the P4, The P4 for desktops, P4-M(SP?) and Mobile Pentium 4-M. The Mobile Pentium 4-M has no heat spreader and looks like the Pentium M. The P4-M seems to have a heat spreader just like the desktop version. The one I'm asking about is the P4-M, I know that it's pin compatible but I'm just worried about voltage and other issues that may arise.
