If your behind a router (or going to be) and you dont have any ports forwarded, no worries. All traffic that goes to your IP without a specific port being open, it gets blocked and sent back with a 404 hehe :)

Actually it gets sent back with an appropriate ICMP error, not an HTTP 404…

Re:so u're suggesting that a router should do the trick? it'll assign me a different ip every time?

No, if you get a router your (public) IP will change (new mac address= new IP) but you will probably keep that address for a while as well. I think some of the more popular brands of home/soho dsl/cable routers on the market will allow you to change the MAC address of the public interface but don't take my word (as I don't use one of those).

AFAIK comcasts IP leases last 10-11 days, after the lease is up comcasts DHCP server renews the lease. If your mac address is the same it will basically "extend" the lease therefore your IP still doesn't change (DHCP servers can be set up to actually assign you a different IP everytime your lease expires but 's is not). I've had the same IP from on the public side of one of my router's interface for over 6 months. If you always stay connected, more than likely, your IP will not change very often. Sounds like you don't have a router, if not then just unplug your modem, swap your nic, restart the pc and you will be assigned a new IP. If I recall correctly, some nic cards come with software (firmware?) that allows the changing/manipulation of the MAC address. Check the documentation for your card.

even though im behind a firewall, i still dont feel secure.
its just a matter of time before somebody can crack in and find personal documents. i dont know, maybe its just me being parnoid.
and with the same ip over n over, they can try again n again…

so u're suggesting that a router should do the trick? it'll assign me a different ip every time?

Shut your computer down when you arent using it, or atleast unplug it from the net. My ip doesnt change as long as Im plugged in and running. As long as you are on the net, those evil "hackers" (sorry to use the low brow (ie wrong definition for this word) term here) can try again and again.

Re:New mac address=new DHCP lease=new ip. As long as you change the mac address of the first interface (router, nic, firewall) after the modem you should be OK.

Re:If uses Static system there is nothing you can do about it.

If it is dynamic, and does not change because you are always connected, disconnect your Modem for 15 min. and then reconnect again.
