Click OK to delete folders in Windows? [windows folder] [c drive]

Q: Guys,

Running XP Pro SP1 fully patched. Ive noticed that under my under C: drive that has a set of compressed (which is what the blue color does not?) Directories that certainly seem to belong to the Windows Update files. If my system is running, its OK to delete folders? They aimlessly being on my HD?

TIA,

Jeff

P.S. I have a search files in this group and did not find anything relevant to my question.

Best Answer: Those folders are windows backup folder from when you did a upgrade say from windows xp to vista or from windows 98 to xp

if your sure you are comfortable with your current operating sysytem it is save to remove them best way to remove would be go to … START – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Cleanup – (heres where it would help to know your current OS) which by looking I am going to assume you are now on Vista…

Select bottom option (All Users) select bottom option… then when it gets done doing what it needs to do click the tab that says More Options…. In Vista I am going to assume that the bottom option will clean up the old files but if none get removed then it safe to say in most cases you can remove them manually ……. any file with the $before it is just a restore point if something goes wrong…. if you follow what i had mention before deleting them manually you can also clean up other areas and also get rid of all but the last restore point…. its all an option your choice what you want to do

I've often wondered the same thing. On my computer, they eat up more than 113 MB — on my 20G harddrive that's nearly full, that's not insignificant. They're called $NtUninstallQxxxxxxx$.

113 MB is 0.5 percent of your harddrive space. If your harddrive is nearly full, I would probably look in other areas for space saving opportunities.

why would you want to remove anything in your windows directory?

Re:I believe that they are just backups of the files that the security updates replace. They allow you to uninstall hotfixes from Add/Remove Programs.

Why do you want to delete them? They don't take up very much room.
