Re:Actually that is a nice card for what it is. Supports Raid 5 and hotspares and such things.

Trouble is that even then cards like this have been mostly eclisped by software raid. I understand that it's a nice card and many of the features are very nice and preferable to software raid in general. Just keep in mind that Linux's software raid is top of the line. It's faster and more relaible then even fairly nice hardware cards. It's one of the more favorable aspects of the OS in low end servers, you can even get fancy with it and hotswappable drives and such if your using SCSI or SATA. (still not as nice or convienent as real hardware raid, though, and you have to use your PCI bandwidth to run the RAID, which you don't have to do with hardware raid card.)

This is also shows the trouble with propriatory drivers. If this was open source it would of been integrated into the kernel a long time ago and it would Just Work ™.

Those from the promise website are for Redhat 9.0. They won't work in a modern kernel, especially a 2.6 series. It was originally designed for the 2.4.20 kernel from Redhat 9.0 and you can use that kernel probably and make the binaries work. You'd loose out on the nicetiess of FC 3 such as real posix threads, posix ACLs, file system improvements, and SELinux. Not realy a big deal unless your using applications that require such things (most don't).

Otherwise you can obtain the source for the drivers from here (http://majestic.lugh.de/~fs/promise/) and have a hand at trying to compile it yourself. I suspect that you would have most success with trying to compile it against a 2.4.x series kernel.

good luck.

Nor should you use it if it does.

Why not get a real raid card?

Drivers are more kernel dependent than distro.

I've had this one for a few years and it does what I want/need it to. I got it for a good price. I see no reason to get something else.

I'd trust Linux's software raid over Promise's software raid. ;)

It's hardware raid.

Most promise cards are bios assisted software raid.

Well, even if that's true of my card it hasn't failed me yet, so why fix it if it's not broken?

Re:The only available for a particular piece of hardware are listed for Red Hat. What are the chances that these will work under ? Thanks.

Depends. If they're available as source chances are good, if they're only available as RPMs they're only guaranteed to work for the kernel they were compiled for.

They should work without a problem.

What are the drivers for?

A RAID controller. (Promise SX4000) Some time this summer I'm going to build a new rig and turn my old one into a file server.
