Computer can not connect to Internet via cable modem directly [cable modem] [mother in law]

Q: I just restarted my future mother in law for her computer and Im having problems with the internet. It works when connected to a router connected to cable modem but not when it is connected directly to cable modem. I can not for life of me remember what I had to do to set it up in the first place. Everyone has an idea of what I miss?

Re:Try setting the NIC to 10mbps, full or half duplex should both work.
