Confused about different drives Western Digital [wd drive] [western digital]
Q: X-bit Labs has just one HDD 500GB Shootout. “In their conclusion, they say: Western Digital: the two discs of this company were the stars of this review (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles / storage/display/seagate-barra-720010.html).
So Im thinking about going with a WD drive instead of the Seagate 7200.10 I had planned for my next build.
The questions:
The enterprise disks (such as RE2 WD5000YS from the test) are fairly similar priced – particularly the lower capacity models – their counterparts SE16 and judging from the above test, she seems a bit faster.
1: Any reason not to proceed with a business model? What about Noise?
2: The RE2 WD5000YS seems a bit faster than the SE16 WD5000KS. RE WD3200YS Would one have the same advantage over an SE16 WD3200KS? (Note, it is not an RE and RE2.)
In online shops here in Denmark I recently SE16 drives to appear with a different model number, which is more expensive than the older models SE16. For example, I can SE16 WD3200KS SE16 for $ 118 and one for $ 150.
3 WD3200KSRTL2: I can WD3200KSRTL2 Product Code not found at site WD (http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/productcatalog.asp? language = en). Does anyone know what the addition of the “RTL 2″ means?
Best Answer: the motherboard will work just fine with the cpu you have, its just like a big waste cause the motherboard can handle much much better cpu and graphic card, plus it is a sli motherboard meaning u can install 2 graphic cards and most motherboards allow one only. thats why its so expensive. the 9500 gt is not a good card for a gamer, but for you its more than enough, you say you play online games? what kinda online games? cause for world of warcraft or counter strike just the built in motherboard graphic card would be enough to play those games, dont even need the 9500 gt. If i were you id just find a cheaper motherboard, cause that one is just a big waste for you.

this is also xfx much cheaper and can use your cpu to its full potential. it has only 2 ram slot but like u said you only buying 2 ram sticks 2gb each so thats plenty. you do NOT need a 750watt power supply, cause thats for people with 300 dollar + graphic cards. any motherboard + cpu escpially only a dual core cpu and a soso graphic card like yours needs 400watt MAX, as u can see this website
http://www.bfgtech.com/bfgr951024gte.asp…
if you go to specifications and scroll all the way down for mininum requirements, it says only 400watt needed and that was tested with a cpu and motherboard way more powerful than yours.

this is a 450watt from corsair, corsair is the best brand name for power supply, quality power supplies can power your system better than lower quality high watt power supplies can do in case you didn't know.
as for the 9500 gt graphic card, you might as well get it, its cheap and will help your performance on vista.
and your tower for this system , you dont really need a 125 dollar one those are for gamers with extreme setup, u can just buy a normal crappy plain looking case for 40 bucks, unless u wanna waste money making it look cool and stylish.
so there that about saves you a good 300 dollars

Note that while the "On" batch sets both Read & Write to 7 seconds, the factory setting is actually r7 & w0 (write disabled).
So, if for normal use you choose to disable both (or more accurately disable Read and leave Write disabled) then later want to configure for RAID use, be sure to then set Write appropriately rather than blindly enabling it.
I'm gonna include this note with the utility, just in case I forget.
Thanks guy, Nice Job.
Re:Welp, it works (ooh, shocker… not really).
I just posted @ fw:

Re:The KS in the drive means it is for a Desktop PC
The RTL2 is not defined on the WD site, but it sounds
like it was a Retail version and not an OEM Model of the drive
Re:Thanks. I'll follow up how it works.

A link was posted in that FW thread yesterday.

If anyone has tried using this utility, please let us know if it worked. Thanks!

WD search is teh funneh. Usually the results come up with the image of some pensive dude but sometimes it just fails with "Can't find that document ANYWHERE! Arrrgggg!! (http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/6505/wdarrrggggkd6.png)", accompanied by an appropriately bewildered dog. ![]()

On turning TLER off. I bought one of these today so I'll let you know if this works

Is it even on when not in a RAID setup?
Yep and AFAIK you can't turn it off. It limits the time your HDD will seek for info. All the reviews that I read said if ya have a choice on a non-raid set-up, stay away.
Everything i've read says that it won't make the slightest bit of difference.
I'd be looking at the enterprise ones myself, the extra warranty is nice.
Re:Judging from the xbit article, I would go for the RE2. The price difference is a couple of bucks, and you get a better drive. I have three RE2 500GB drives right now, no complaints, and I feel better about their quality versus the regular drivers (whether true or not). Basically the way I look at it, they are supposed to be built for tougher conditions, and they appear to be faster, so why the heck not. As far as noise is concerned, they are pretty quiet, since I can't compare to the SE16, I can't help you out there, but I am extremely pleased with the drives.

1) They use TLER. Noise levels should be about the same.

I believe so, but I'm not 100% sure.
Re:I believe the RE models are built for servers and RAID setups. The WD home page lists the differences between the two. I have a WD 320GB SE16 and a WD 250GB RE16 as my eSATA. I bought the RE accidently but decided to keep it. There is absolutely no difference in noise levels between the two drives. I think the RE has a longer warranty too.

Do you mention 'Time Limited Error Recovery' as a reason not to go with an enterprise drive (for a single drive, desktop rig)?
What negative effect would TLER have? Is it even on when not in a RAID setup?
