connecting computers on the Internet with a router [router setup] [linksys router]
Q: I know nothing about routers and cable modems, but heres my problem. I want to connect three computers on the Internet, we have ATT broadband. I have a Linksys router, but the instructions that come with it are not very helpful. Ive tried to set things the way the router said, but it will not work. Perhaps some information about basic router setup would help. A website would also be helful .
Thanks
Erik
Best Answer: If you cant buy a wireless device , wire solution will be solve your problem .
if the third pc doesn't have network adapter so Buy a network adapter for it and connect it to the cable modem ,
there are some USB wireless cards in the market that are cheep , you can test one of them .

Re:Not true at all…I would say that my provider is not a small hometown business. (Adelphia)
I have seen this issue with many cable modem ISP's, and this feature is usually set on the SurfBoard series of modems. A MAC clone is not neccessary in almost all cases.
Re:Originally posted by: guy What i think might be happeneing is that your cable modem has "learned" your MAC address for the original system it was connected to and thus needs to be cleared.
Once it is cleared it will "learn" the MAC address of your router and you might be all set. This is true only in very limited cases, with some small ISPs, who do not authenticate, or use other means of authentications.
Millions of Cable user needs to authenticate when logging on, and the way it is done is via the original MAC number of the NIC given, or registered by the ISP. In such cases it is not a Cable Modem reset thing.
When using a Router on a Cable system the registered MAC has to be Cloned to the Router.
Re:Try this…
Unplug the cable modem first and leave it off for a minute or two.
Setup the router with your systems connected to it. Make sure they are getting an IP from the router's DHCP server. (if it si a linksys it will probably be a 192.168.1.x IP)
Plug the ethernet cable from the cable modem intot he WAN port of the router.
Turn the cable modem back on and let it come up to its normal state…
Try and get on the net…

Re:The computers arent' networked or anything…They all have NICs and we have a Linksys router and a cable connection. I am just wondering if I am missin something because I can't seem to get this to work.
Re:What is your current setup? Do you have the pc's set up in a lan? Can they see each other?
Re:you probably need to clone your MAC adress onto the router.
