Creating a hard drive for backup [gb hd] [device manager]

Q: I just finished my build and have 2 Hitachi 80 . I installed XP Pro on one and want one for a double backup in case something goes wrong. My problem is that I am prepared to back up and the second hard disk is not seen as a drive in My Computer. It will appear as a disk in . Im not sure how to go about activating the station. Can anyone give me some help on startup? Thanks

Re:It's really very simple to clone a complete drive. There are some housekeeping steps to enhance it.

1. Run a complete virus scan and malware scan on the source drive.

2. Do a complete optimization on the source drive.

3. Clone the source to the target – I prefer TrueImage 8 – lets me control everything.

4. Then swap the drives to make sure the newly cloned drive works perfectly.

I do this every week on three systems – each has a spare or reserve drive that once cloned, is disconnected. Changing drives is easy with a switch.

The target drive does not have to be formatted or anything – can be cherry. Always use a manual clone process so you can tell the program to delete all partitions on the target and preserve all data on the source. With different size drives, select a proportional data transfer – for same size drives select as is.

I don't know if Ghost gives you all those controls, but TI8 sure does.

Re:right click on the unalocated space and click create partition. follow the bouncing ball after that. format it ntfs. open up Ghost and click backup. save the image file on the 2nd drive and it will reboot your machine and backup for you.

if you want a "hot spare" you need to go into ghost and choose clone. this will make the 2nd disk exactly like the 1st one. either way read the instructions and good luck.

Re:I have Norton Ghost and want to make the 2nd drive a clone as a constant backup. I prefer not to do raid 1 because if I get a virus both drives will ahve it. I want a clean backup. My question is how do I prepare the 2nd drive to receive the backup? After going into Disk Management, what neeeds to be done. Thanks for this info.

Re:If you want to make a clone of the main drive then use a disk imaging program like Norton Ghost.

Re:Right click My Computer and choose Manage.

Click on Disk Management. You can do all that from there.

If your board does RAID, you'd be better off doing a RAID 1. I do believe you're going to run into problems with what you plan to do.

Re:Not sure how to get to it to format it yet and if I then need to install Windows and all the drivers separately. Would appreciate feedback on this and thanks in advance
