D-Link DI-524 vs Netgear WGR614NA [netgear wgr614] [d link di 524]

Q: I am looking for my first router to get / firewall. Im looking for something that the least amount of fuss while still being safe and robust result. (Not to mention cheap). I did alittle research in both the D-Link DI-524 (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1u0026amp, pid = 316) and the (http://www. Netgear.com / products/details/WGR614.php). Feature wise they seem comparible both “G” router with four 10/100 ports. Im not going to use the wireless capabilites just yet, but it would be nice if I need it close to what I did notice is that the Netgear future.

One talking about SPI double firewall protection and true firewall NAT
Secure
A protects your network against hackers: Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) and Denial of Service (DoS) attack prevention repels potential threats by scanning incoming traffic and Network Address Translation (NAT) protects your network devices from intruders. Powerful WEP encryption (40/64- or 128-bit) on the wireless LAN conceals your information from eavesdroppers. MAC Address Control prevents unauthorized access to your wireless network. VPN pass-through give secure Internet access to your office or corporate network.

Whereas the D-Link has not said anything about the SPI.
NAT with VPN pass-through (Network Address Translation) 977 503? MAC Filtering 977 503? 977 503 IP filtering? 977 503 URL Filtering? 977 503 domain block? Scheduling

Does mean that the Netgear router would be safer? What would you recommend?

Re:windows firewall is pretty crappy. your netgear firewall will do much better at deflecting incoming junk. But you should get a software firewall as backup and to keep tabs on what your computer is sending out. I use sygate freeware, but i hear good things about zonealarm (also free), and i'm sure others here have their preferences.

Re:I baught the WGR614v5 when the Dlink 524 that I got in the kit on black friday wouldnt work right. The disconnecting issues with it were rampant and the firmware is downright broke. Even after downgrading it to 1.03. The only reason I havnt taken back the 524 is because for the price paid, the 802G PC card that came with it was good.

the WGR614v5 has been a dream, smooth install..smooth setup.. rarly need to baby sit it (once I had a complete wifi breakdown, so bad that I was begginig to think something had just turned on that dissrupted the airwaves heavily for a few minutes.) And the netgear had 0 troubles with the dlink pc card, ambicom CF card, and the belkin usb wifi device.

Re:I stopped by staples today and picked up the v5 and it installed without a hitch. It came to $29.99 after rebates which I thought was pretty good. I disabled my Windows Firewall and ran a port scan over at broadbandreports.com and it found nothing. Said I had a healthy setup. Should I reenable the windows firewall or woudl the router be enough?

Also This is v5 of the netgear which is the most up to date version.

Thanks. The reason I mentioned the 524 is because OFfice Depot has it on sale for $39.99 after rebate. And Staples has the Netgear on sale for $29.99 after rebate. So they were both going to be cheap. Does the 624 give you 108Mbs?

According to reviews it works faster than the 524. And I saw rebats out there that bring it down to the same price level as the others

Re:I have the and new egg is selling it after $20 rebate for $35 w/shipping. It has worked great, but i did have one problem with SPI on Wolfenstein:ET. When i pinged servers through the game the router would freeze my connection until i logged into the router with my password, must have seen the icmp's as a DoS attack i guess. when i turned off SPI i didn't have this problem. I don't really play ET anymore so i have SPI on and haven't had problems with any other game. my network hasn't gone down once in 6 straight months.

I have a wireless connection through 2 heavy walls and 20ft and get 85-90% signal strength which is excellent.
I would definitely recommend this router.
