D-Link Gaming Router Linksys WRT54G [linksys wrt54g] [netgear mr814v2]
Q: I am currently using a Netgear wireless router MR814v2 B (2 years old), which is making me much trouble by constantly crashing. The current network is setting up two gaming computers and a laptop, and when all three are in use and someone downloads all the router crashes. Now I am looking for the D-Link gaming router due to the QoS and the Linksys as a result of the open source firmware, the only requirements are stable compounds in heavy use (both uploads and downloads) and the price in a distant second . My connection is cable 5mb/375k. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I think I will go with the linskys , because this weekend I borrowed a friends netgear router (new model) and it worked flawlessly with no crashes. The thing is I buy the linksys save some money and then buy a Qos router next year when I upgrade my computer. Thanks guys for all your responses.
linksys does have QoS option. Im not sure if the default firmware have it but im using hyperWRT firmware and it has QoS. You can set a port to priority.

Get a WRT54GS and third party firmware.
not to mention there are many 3rd party firmware for it out there that can boost your signal strength to 100-280mw from the about 42mw default. It will make your signal strength stronger.

Re:I can say that i used one of dlinks wireless routers before and it was totaly CRAP. The signal is worse than the WRT54GS that im using now despite being placed at the same location in the house. I believe it was the dlink 524 or something. I also had a dlink cable modem…the only one on newegg by dlink and it broke within 3 months. It overheat like crazy. Now im using a motorola and i bittorent like crazy and it doesnt freeze up or get hot. Your choice but seeing how their other products are such low quality i doubt the overpriced "gaming" router will be any better. They are like nintendo…they try to get too much profit and make very value products by cutting costs in everything. Compare the weight of the motorola 5120 modem to the dlink one and you will feel the weight difference! Not only that, their router i had, the 524 i think, felt like a piece of plastic compared to the WRT54GS.

Better yet, get the Hawking Broadband booster, which uses the same QoS, and can be used on any router, or on multiple routers.
meh…I don't trust it. I don't see how it wouldn't cause trouble with other QOS implmentations on the same line. Hell, where would it cache anythign anyways

Re:As is the D-Link might be a good choice.
However if you can get Linksys WRT54 that can be ?flashed? with 3rd party firmware (and you do not mind playing around with it), the Linksys solution might be cheaper, and it might have more room to configure than the D-Link.

Re:I have roughly the EXACT same setup as you. I am on Time Warner, 5mb/384kb and have 3 desktop PC's and a laptop setup right now. I am currently using the D-Link Gaming Router(dgl-4300).
Heavy downloading from at least 2 pc's constantly. Run gaming servers/teamspeak server from another sucking up my upload. Router handles it all really well. I can even give priority as to who gets how much bandwidth or whatever. There's even options for portforwarding for most of the popular games out there. Pretty awesome IMHO. If price is distant second, go for it. This router hasn't crashed on me once.
NOTE: Update to latest firmware to avoid weird issues like dropping connections. Probably fixed by now, but when i had mine all I had to do was update firmware and weird bugs just..went away. Poof. Gone.
I can also vote for linksys router. Friend of mine uses that at his home(however has also since moved to a gigabit d-link router), but he was always happy with the Linksys.
