Hi,

Are you using the NIC (network interface card) on your PC? is it plugged into a router/adsl modem? – Does your PC suddenly become usable the moment the NIC icon next to your windows clock appear? AND, is your NIC currently setup to use DHCP to acquire an IP address from your modem/router? – If thats a YES, double click on your NIC icon next to the windows clock, take a look at your current IP address/subnet/gateway, write them down, open up the TCPIP properties for your NIC and put them in manually to mirror what you wrote down – do not select use DHCP – my pc took an extra 30 seconds to 'get going' after I saw the desktop, and I tracked it down to being the DHCP process of my NIC communicating with my router.

in the settings it says obtain one automatically
so i just changed it to reflect the settings that i know it will always get and well im posting here now so i havent messed my connection up, hopefully it'll boot faster now! :)

Do you have an ati video card? ATI's Hotkey poller was causing extreme slowdowns at first boot on a desktop pc of mine that was running Win XP.

i disabled that service and its a lot faster, gonna try the other NIC tip to see if i can shave a few more secs off! :)

thx

Re:Try using Bootvis (http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/BootVis.mspx) to see what is causing the problem. You can also use it to optimize boot times.

I've seen this a lot when you map a drive or otherwise use a network resource that then becomes unavailable. That would be my first guess.

havent done any of either lately…
