DSL users (especially SBC) . What kind of D / L speeds you get? [dsl users] [sbc]

admin / August 31st, 2010/ Posted in Networking / No Comments »

Q: Ive been up and running with DSL for three days.

All now I can say is WOW . what a difference broadband. I never really thought I would be far from it, dialup was excellent, esp. at only $ 9/mo through a local, reliable Internet . I mean, I remember logging in with Ripterm because of Petes. : D

Anyways, on to the point: If you have DSL, what kind of speeds do you see? Just trying to gauge what I should expect to receive. The installation directions said to leave the modem for 10 days to allow it to optimize for the best rate. After 3 days, I checked my connection and Im getting 1150-1200 Kb / s constant. Do I need to get more, and you really need to leave the modem for the full 10 days?

BTW, Im pretty close to a CO .

Re:Firstly, thanx for the replies.

Still only 1205/214. Would like to try an East coast server, but don't have Toolpoints for DSLReports site.

Why would you ever turn the DSL Modem off?Do they ever overheat ? I/we am/are sometimes gone for extended periods of time.

Welcome to the 21st Century.

The U.S was 8th last year, 11th this year and dropping fast sadly.

1-19-2004 Other nations zip by USA in high-speed Net race

Despite its economic and political might, the USA is falling behind other nations in arming consumers and small businesses with a key economic tool: high-speed Internet access, also known as broadband. The USA ranks 11th worldwide in broadband use.

Spreading fast Internet access in the USA is so critical to long-term economic might that TechNet, a group of top U.S. tech CEOs, says it's the 21st-century equivalent of landing a man on the moon. "I'm just amazed how far behind we are," says Sung Won Sohn, chief economist at Wells Fargo.

Someone at work had the same reaction when I told him I had finally taken the plunge (broadband). Thing is, after 4 + days, I can't figure out anything left to download or otherwise make use of my newly increased "speed". I guess my main benefit is that it now only takes 15 min. to hit all my "daily sites" that I normally visit, versus 30 min. – 1 hr. before. Only limited by how fast I can read.

Then again, it's also greatly helped with Windoz Updates … updating from a fresh install used to be a killer.

Re:I had my service for about 5 days now and dude, it's been down for the whole day today. I hope this is not a regular thing b/c I hate to pay for something that is not reliable.

I just let them have an email full of words and the service is up now 5 minutes after my email. How long will it be up, I don't know.

Re:I'm on DSL rated for 512/128. Speed test on dslreports gives me 467/135. The highest d/l rate I seen is 60KB/sec from the net.

I got the 512/128 package to try out the service. Since the first month is free with this package only. I like the service so much I'm going to upgrade to 1500/384 next month.

Re:i got approx 2Mbps downstream and 190Kbps upstream. I wish upstream was a little faster though…

This is at my office that I work at. Not at my house.

EDIT: What's the point of turning off the DSL modem? Just leave it on forever. I do that with both the DSL modem and my personal cable modem.

Re:Running my rated speed + a little (Rated 1500/128, actual 1508/147 :D ).

Re:I get about 1300/137 with Verizon DSL according to DSLreports. Had it for 6 months now on 20+ year old phone lines, connected to a jack that's split from my kitchen, and run on a 50 foot phone line. I cannot ever go back to 56k. Never heard of 10 days optimization though. There's no reason for your modem to be turned off anyway so the 10 days isn't hard.

All I can say is WOW … what a difference broadband makes. I never really thought I would get that much out of it, dialup was fine, esp. at only $9/mo through a local, reliable ISP … I mean, I remember logging on with Ripterm for Pete's sake. :D

Anyways, on to the point : If you have DSL, what kind of speeds are you seeing ? Just trying to get a gauge for what I should come to expect. The install directions said to leave the modem on for 10 straight days to allow it to optimize for best speed. After 3 days, I've checked my connection and I am getting 1150-1200 Kb/s consistently. Should I gain more, and do you really need to leave the modem on for the full 10 days ?

BTW, I am fairly close to a C.O. …

Why would you ever turn the DSL Modem off? Get the max here (capped limit not Modem limit, Modem can do 8 meg down, 1 meg up) 1472 down 220 up. That is the max due to protocol overhead.
