Dual 1.4 GHz Dual 1.2Ghz TBIRD or palomino? [mac g4] [palominos]
Q: Do I do my homework for a dual socket A system. I was wondering if the optimizations in the new palomino are worth? The systems will be used for Photoshop, Quark, PageMaker, Frontpage and databases. I suggested a Mac G4, but that idea was turned down.

Re:Dual 1.2GHz Pallies it will be. Let me get my proposal in and see what happens.
Thanks to everyone for the help.
I'll still take opinions of the rest of the system.

Re:Take the Dual AthlonMP.
The Thunderbird will run in a dual processor configuratuion but the Palomino gains significantly more from it then the T-Bird. A single Palomino is roughly equal to a single T-Bird @ 1.33 in most applications, …. but if your looking towards FrontPage, Photoshop, database work etc. then the Palomino's optimizations really help it out and I bet it'd be slightly faster. The big thing is that it really gains a lot more from being run in SMP then the T-Birds do.

Re:Yea, I am going with at least an Enermax 461 and will have two large AMD approved Coolermaster HS/Fans.
I may bump up the power supply since I plan on putting a 15K RPM Seagate Cheetah in a aluminum drive case for storage.
A nice Antec SX800 series case with 4 fans should be good ventalation.
Other opinions on ther hardware?

I 2nd that. All but one Socket A CPU (Morgan should be compatible just hasn't been tested yet) has been tested successfully being used in SMP operation. While it all sounds good about Palomino, let me ask people who have used MP's. Is there seriously much of a difference using Paly's? I bet u still need to get a fairly good HSF, and a 350W p/s at least. And noise, is hardly a problem. There are plenty of quite, sufficent coolers for 1.4's. Just read Anand's Socket A cooler comparision. True SSE is a benifit, but still the bottom line is that the 1.4 is faster than 1.2 MP. If u so dearly want the cooler running, less power CPU, then wait for 1.5 Palys to come out (If they ever do).

Re:Your in for a world of hurt if you try the 1.4s. Unsupported for dual ops by AMD and not built for dual ops. The 1.2s are your best bet for stability and proper function.

Re:If you're going dual's, the palos are your best choice, as they have many optimizations built in and have been specifically designed for SSE instructions and dual operations.

Re:If heat and noise is not an issue, then go withthe 1.4s. If it heat is bit of concern, then build a couple of 1.2 MP's. In either case it is going to be smoking fast.
Re:Wont the 1.2s draw less power? 1.4s suck it down.
Re:Dual 1.4's in pretty much everything outperform the 1.2 MP's. Plus they're cheaper. I'd get the 1.4's.
