Dual 2001FP or 2001FP's and 2405 [long time listener] [dell 2001fp]

Q: Hi,

first time caller. Smile

I currently conducting an AMD 64 3200 + with an ASUS X800 Pro (12-pipeline) with a dual monitor setup on a and Dell 1905. My wife goes to 19 inches required for her new office, so that leaves me with the unenviable position of having a new (second) monitor to buy. Smile

Ive never really enjoy the 20 inch and 19 inch side. The different resolutions can cause major damage to my eyes, and it would be fun to two 2001FPs that reason.

However I am very tempted by a 2405FP.

My questions:

1. Would the 2405 alongside the 2001 give me so much annoyance as the 2001 addition to the 1905 – etc.

2 different resolutions. Will the X800 Pro are able to pump out a respectable 1900 x 1200 frame rate for 2405 for your high-end FPS graphics boar coming soon instance FEAR, STALKER and even the less demanding but no less fun Dungeon Siege 2 and RTSs like Age of Empires 3 and Earth 2160.

I d really appreciate thoughts and feedback on both questions.

The 2405 has a much nicer picture. When playing letterboxed the sides of the screen blend in *extremely* well with the bevel, I've sometimes had to look closely to see that it was happening. In contrast, they are very visible on the 2001FP when playing widescreen content. I guess this is probably the difference in 'black levels' that I have seen people comment on.

They are noticeably different heights, although this is less of an issue for me as they are fed by different inputs.

The two of them together make a very very wide display, which requires significant head movement to read parts of each comfortably.

Hi guy,

Wow that was the only drawback?

Well that is certainly liveable with.

It's such a difficult decision. I do need two monitors. I've become too used to running two monitors to go back to only one and I'll need to order the monitor today or tomorrow to ensure I get the new one in time for the 19 inch to be taken.

If only you could like borrow these things for a while from Dell and then return what you didn't like. A monitor is such a personal (and expensive) item.

Do you still run the 2001 next to the 2405? Do you have a pic you could post of the differences in size?

I don't still run the monitors together. I traded the 2001FP to a friend, since I didn't really need that much more real estate than the 2405 provided. I enjoyed the two together most while running the 2001 in portrait (for web browsing) and the 2405 in landscape.

sorry for the delay in response, but I hope you like your choice, whichever it is.
oh, and for pics comparing the size difference:

has plenty of pics to drool over.

Games will look fuzzy because of the pixel strectching which involves rounding of pixel positions which produces uneven results. I guess if you run the game at 800×600 it will not have the uneven stretching, but that resolution is in itself low. Basically you really need a better vid card for a 16×12 monitor.

Actually when I had a 2001 it didn't look to bad running 1280×960. In games that are fast paced it really isn't that noticable and 800×600 looks worse… than 1280×960. If the games have alot of text then I might try to run native but if your going for FPS anyways lowering the res isn't that bad at all.

On as side note I wouldn't run 1280×1024 at all though as it is an incorrect aspect ratio for the 2001.
Yeah I don't understand why 1360×1024 is absent from so many games. When I had my 900NF I started to use 1360×1024 and it just seemed much better than 1280×1024.

Ugh.. I can't decide on two 2001fp's or one 2405fpw.

I play games (currently WoW, future quake 4)

Multitable on Partypoker

Well, with 2 2001FPs, you can do 8 tables without overlap. With the 2405FPW, you can only do 4.

what do you guys think I should get?

GO for a 2405. I like it much better than the 2001 I had, and I loved the 2001. Remember you can also use letterbox on the 2405 so that it can play 1600×1200 on games, but there are alot of games that are easily modified to play in a widescreen res.

Re:The 2405 is a beautiful monitor as everybody says – I have a 2005fpw as well that I sometimes go dual with, but I've had to do that less and less the more I use the 2405. 1920×1200 gives me all the screen real estate I need, for now :) And running lower non-native resolutions looks *much* better than I anticipated – sure, it's not ideal, but when games don't support greater than 1600×1200, I'll have to make do.

Hey guy what's the 2405 owner club?

Its just something some 2405 owners pasted into their sigs. Nothing too special.

The pixel pitch of the 2405 isn't the same, it's 0.270mm while the 2001FP is 0.255mm. The display area is going to be about 0.7" taller. A 23" LCD like the HP L2355 would match almost perfectly though.

Agreed. I had a a 2001 and my current 2405 next to each other for a little bit. The 2405 is a tad taller than the 2001 as far as actualy screen size.

The image quality on the 2405 is that much better. (And I say this as a big fan of 2001FP) It might have been from using VGA vs DVI, (ran them on x800xt AIW).

2405FPW is 8bit vs 2001FP's 6bit

2001FP is also an 8bit phillips 20.1'' panel

ooops my mistake.

My opinion: If you don't need the dual-monitor setup, sell your 2001FP and put it towards a single 2405FPW. I've seen the 2405 several times, and it is one BEAUTIFUL monitor. However, if you do need the dual-monitor setup, get another 2001FP. It'll be much better to have two of the same monitors. :)

this is exactly what I recommend as well.
two 2001FPs was my original plan, until the 2405 had that discount.

wrong. both are 8.

Re:… but the main difference is the massively better contrast and brightness on the 2405.

Re:I ran my 2001FP next to the 2405 after I got the 2405. I experienced no problems moving from one to the other. The ONLY drawback to having them next to each other was that the 2405 made the 2001FP look less fantastic. The image quality on the 2405 is that much better. Re:Still would really appreciate any real world experience with running both the 2405 and the 2001 side by side…:-)

Re:Yes exactly. The pitch (distance between adjacent pixels) is the same.

Re:OK. Apologies. I just looked up what pixel pitch means…so I think that means the actual pixels themselves are the same size? Is that right?

Re:Well the vertical resolution is obviously the same – but what I said is actually that the pixel PITCH is also the same, making the screen area of the 2405 exactly the same height as the 2001's.

Re:Thanks for that info guy.

Pretty much confirms what I thought on both counts.

My biggest issue is the compatibility with my existing 2001FP in normal 2D/desktop work. If as you have suggested the 2405 has the same dot pitch of 1200 height then sweeping my mouse from the 2405 to the 2001 should be seemless. As contrasted to my 2001FP (1600×1200) to my 1905 (1280×1024) – especially in the bottom corner/top corner sweep the mouse across and CLUNK! – got to move the mouse down a bit or up a bit to get it onto the next screen. Truly annoying.

3D gaming I can live with cause if the 2405 is anything like the 2001FP I can run it at lower resolutions for gaming and things still look great – eg Far Cry on the 2001FP at 1280×1024 looks (to my eye) really good and is much better for frame rate than 1600×1200.

Has anyone got a 2001FP and a 2405 side by side? How do you find them together?

Re:It appears the 2405 has the exact same pixel pitch as the 2001, will say, it's like the 2001 only wider.

3D at 1920×1200 is hard work even for the fastest of the most current graphics cards. Your X800pro is going to sweat.
