Easiest way to connect my second PC to get? [lan card] [cat5]
Q: Hey everybody, quick question . I have my Comcast line connected to 8Mbps, and Im lovin it! Im looking to hook net (1) other computer to the internet, but I do not want to spend $ 50 on a separate router. One of my friends told me that if an additional LAN card, I could just hook my main PC to the modem via ethernet into my onboard LAN on my main PC, then a CAT5 from a PCI LAN card of my main PC, my 2nd PCs onboard LAN and connect that way. Does this make any sense? Would it work? I do not know if I said that right, cuz it makes little sense when he told me to do, but is there a way to my second PC connected to Comcast to get the line w / the purchase of a separate router?

Re:I'll also toss my vote in for going with a router. Get a new or used linksys or netgear for $30-$40 and it will be much better than a $10-$20 extra NIC.
Re:Alright, sounds like I should just got with the router. I'll look around for a cheap one. Thanx again guys!
Re:Actually you would spend $10 on an extra NIC while you can find a Router for $20 or less.
The least expensive Router would serve you better than Two NICs and software NAT.
$29.99 after rebate and it is SuperG Wireless as well.

Re:Some friendly advice, the $50 for a new router is worth the headaches and troubleshooting I'll guarantee you'll have if you try using your 1 computer to share out the internet. I'd suggest simply buying a router. $50 is well worth it, not just for the added security.
Re:it's possible but the best advice is just to get a router. a chain like that requires:
-2nd LAN card in main PC
-crossover ethernet cable
-extra configuration in windows
in addition, the downside of that setup is that the second computer will be unable to connect if the first one shuts down.
a router will provide security and stability for the network and you can just use a regular patch cable for the second computer rather than trying to find a crossover.
