Q: I have just replaced my MB with a + . and now Im noticing a “while” or a “high frequency” noise . sounds like a small continuous beep. Does anybody know whats going on?

other specs: ati , 256 512 ram, 1700xp, 120GB WD, Seagate 120 GB, winxp sp1

Re:i'll have to take a closer look. i want to say the sound is coming from the area near the IDE cables, but don't hold me to that.

It does look like a fan initally, but on closer inspection it's just an odd shaped heatsink. Not a great design.

Anyhoo…You said the sound was intermittent. Does it correspond with any activity from preiphals or the like?

Re:AFAIK, the chipset on the 8RDA+ is passively cooled.

Re:do people typically replace the chipset fan? the sound i'm hearing aren't continuous. i dont think there is any pattern. It's not really a whine either. it's a faint beeping.

Re:I was just suggesting it might be the chipset fan. That thing looks like a little screamer.

Re:xp1700. not OC'd. aftermarket HSF (vantec).

mods: can you move this thread to motherboards? it's probably more relevant there. Thanks!

Re:tech support has indicated to me that this type of issue is normally related to the power supply and that i should have at least a 350 W ps.

but i do have a 350w enermax. since i don't have another ps to swap out i was considering buying this:

thoughts?

Re:maybe there is a break in period? We'll see if this tiny beeping goes away.

Re:I don't think thats what he meant, the speaker could have created a highfrequency sound.

Next suggestion!

Re:no i left that floating…should i have hooked it up?

yes, i'm using the onboard sound system. works like a charm! Not what I meant. I mean the system speaker that is in the case and hooks up to the motherboard with the front reset, power, leds, etc. go.

Re:Is the system speaker hooked up?

Re:wd is a 2mb. and it never whined before.

Re:Could be the WD drive; the 8MB cache ones are known to whine.
