Firefox vs. IE in memory usage [browser windows] [memory usage]

admin / December 8th, 2010/ Posted in Software / No Comments »

Q: Ok we all know this is firefox tab browsing feature. Here is my question.

i many open constantly, in fact it is very common that I have 20 + open windows. So my question is:

20 as tabs in a case of IE cases firefox
vs.
20

does firefox necessarily use less memory?

also, since I use so many tabs in Firefox, it crashes once a day, causing me to lose all tabs.
i Firefox have been removed and went back to IE, any ideas?

thanks for the help

Re:FF crashes for me also :( But probably once a week… This in linux too!
here's what I have open right now at work.. One firefox window per virtual desktop, everything open in tabs

Desktop 1:
-Database Schema
-Development environement application 1
-Test Enviornment application 1
-Production Enviornment application 1
-Development environement application 2
-Test Enviornment application 2
-Production Enviornment application 2
-MySQL Docs
-Python Docs
-Google
-Google
-Google
-Google

Desktop 2
-Gmail
-Y! mail
-CNN
-ESPN
-Y! Finance
-Y! Fantasy Sports
-eBay
-ATOT
-/.
-Google News

It will crash if I open another window, I won't get the menubar, icons, bookmarks etc.. .just the html and window decorations, I'll take a screenshot next time it happens..

here's a question … why do you have to run 20 windows at the same time ? Even when I'm doing hardcore comparison shopping or something, I have 5 open max…

Just curious.

At home:
Anandtech forums
/.
osnews
undeadly.org
mailing list archives
google
history of halloween (haven't finished reading it yet :o )
bsdforums.org sometimes
easynews
arstechnica
dictionary.com
various sites for stuff I'm researching or stuff that's linked to from one site or another that I'm interested in

Except for the history of halloween, everything else is fairly normal for me. Sometimes it's more, sometimes less.

Tips and Secrets for a Better Memory

I think it's an attention deficit thing. Maybe you only have 5 tabs open on a single subject area but have multiple things you're trying to do at once. For instance, I have 9 tabs open right now. One for my email, 4 for s@h, one for the forums, and the rest for what I'm actually trying to do right now (which is get cvs installed on linux). I switch back and forth between areas as my attention drifts (and occasionally I drift off to sleep) and generally get less done than if I concentrated on what I'm doing

Re:I must be the luckiest guy in the world when it comes to FF and crashes, or rather, the lack of crashes.
I can't remember the last time FF crashed on me…0.7 maybe?

Re:This happens to me all of the time with firefox (not so much with mozilla). I don't have a lot of ram in the machine I use it on (512MB), and constatly have a bunch of things going. Mozilla seems to handle it better than FF. I _VERY_ rarely get crashes with Moz, but I can generally get ff to do it daily.

Try out Mozilla, despite the extra software I think it's a bit easier on systems than ff.

Re:It's still officially in beta, so you might have discovered a bug for them. Do you have the option turned on to send issues back to Mozilla?
You're implying that bugs will disappear when it is out of beta. That's highly unlikely.

Anyway, if you have Talkback IDs for crashes, pm me and I can take a look.

Re:i ran the preview 1.0, isn't that the newest?

is firefox really that good:?

Re:Keep in mind that 20 IE windows doesn't necessarily mean 20 instances of IE, one process can have more than one window.

To combat the firefox crash maybe you could run 2 instances of it and split your tabs between the two. Or would that lead to profile conflicts? Anyways, maybe the newest release will fix your issues.
