freezing system (another!) [internal modem] [sound blaster live value]
Q: Hi,
my system is as follows: 3
Pentium 450mhz
DFI P2XBL
128mb SDRAM (2x 64MB)
Sound Blaster Live! value
Leadtek 64MB GeForce2 pro
internal modem
40x CD rom
4×4x24 burner
12gig seagate
2gig IBM
recenly it started to freeze too. Ussually it freezes when loading a complex web or game.
It used to vary rarley happen if I had a Voodoo3, but since I upgraded to a GeForce2 is quite often.
I initially thought it was a nutritional problem, but have tried to unplug all CD-ROMs and a hard drive and the problem still occours.
my next idea is that a faulty ram problem? Is there a way to test this? ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated
i formatted and tried many times with Win98SE, WinME and Win2000 and the problem still happens. so its a hardware problem sure.
thanks alot.
cheers,
Glenn Thomas
Best Answer: Your question doesn't make a lot of sense.
If you are putting in extra storage by means of an extra hard drive then move your data folders and files to it but not your programs. If you can't find the move command then "cut & paste"
This will leave more room on the first drive.
Re:is there any pci cards in pci slot 1 (the slot under the agp port)
Re:It could be a heat issue as well. The 64mb Leadtek runs a lot hotter than the Voodoo. Maybe you should look into another fan (case or pci)
Re:i do have another hard drive, i will try that next. though i dont think it is the problem as there is no hard-drive thrashing or anything before the system hangs, it will just suddenly freeze dead, sometimes with a high pitched squeal in the speakers. i will try another hard drive though.
thanks,
Glenn Thomas
Re:usually memory errors result in blue screens or obvious error messages. i've seen this happen when hard drives start to go bad and have to retry a lot when trying to cache pages on the disk. this shows up as a freeze until the disk retries finally work. do you have another hd you can put an os onto and try?
Re:i have tried using the latest drivers for all my hardware, the problem still occours.
the old voodoo3 died on me
so i cant test it by swapping it. if it isnt a problem with any other hardware i shall have to borrow a video card to test that.
Re:Check to make sure you have the most recent drivers for your new video card. Have you considered reinstalling your old video card to see if the lockups disappear?
