Has Onboard Audio (AC97) affect the quality of the ripped MP3's? [philips seismic edge] [ac97 codec]

Q: I have a PC with an (which the motherboard). I am planning to install a sound card soon (), and Im also getting the Logitech z560 speakers week.

However following in the past year I have many CDs and ripping made using LAME MP3. I have them all stored on my HD. I was very proud to

A collection . My friend told me that my mp3s sound tinny because I do not have a sound card, when I created them. Is this true? I thought only the sound quality of audio output influences; Does it also affect the sound quality when ripping CDs as well?

I was impressed that since ripping is done by software, a sound card (or lack thereof) will not affect the sound quality. Do I need an MP3 files over and over?

Please advice.

Re:That Hardware Avenue article is quite good. It looks like the author mostly took what's considered "gospel" at the HydrogenAudio forums and put in a nice, easy to read format. Great piece of info to point newbies at so they don't have to wade through forums.

Re:MP3s will sound "tinny" because the AC'97 codec will upsample(though poorly) all your 44.1Khz PCM MP3s to 48Khz. Actually, it is not "tinny" per se but more like the bad resampling degrades the audio quality.

Digital Audio Extraction(DAE) or "ripping" does NOT involve the sound card. The choice of ripping software(combined with the right settings), the physical quality of your CD, and the CD/DVD ROM drive itself will be the major factors in determining the quality of your extracted WAV files.

Here's a good read,

Re:Ripping MP3s completely bypasses the soundcard. It has nothing to do with the quality of your soundcard.

Re:Their is a review on the techreport of soundcards (including ac97) have a read of that

Re:Thanks Jeremiah. That's good news!

Re:No will won't, your friend is wrong.

Ripping is down by software, encoded by software.. you can rip without a soundcard! A poor soundcard can cause playback to be poor, but only CODEC (your LAME one, however, is top notch) can cause a poor MP3 file in the first place.
