haveing problem with my first home network [linksys router] [logon type]
Q: I just built my second computer and I wanted to share my DSL and they are connected, so I can share files and drives, so I picked up a Linksys router. I have it all set up andi can see both computers from both computers in my network places and I can on my new computer to my old one.but when I went to my old computer to my new computer says
compter_name try accesible
logon not failure: the user does not type on this computer logon requsted
both computers are given out win 2k.i had zone alarm on the old but I after I quit the router. I looked around me in administartive tools for a while for something that seemed related to permissions. Also searched around on google and a few other sites. this is probably a really stupid thing but keep in mind Ive never done this before. can anyone walk me through this? the only advice that I received when I posted this in the networking forum was add the login name and password you used on the new computer as a user on the old. idid all that and still Jack so I thought Id try here.
Best Answer: use crosslink cable of rj45 and it will be ok
Re:With 2000 and XP you have to have an account setup on the computer you are trying to access.
For example Go to the old computer and add an account using the same username and password (if any) as you use on the second. I know there is a guest account but I don't know how to use it. I always disable it. From what I have read using the guest account is a large security hole. I just setup both of my machines with the necessecary accounts.
And I have to ask are you sharing anything on the old system. Do you have the printer shared? Do you have any folders shared? If you aren't sharing anything there is nothing to see. Just in case you don't know just right click folder, drive, or printer in explorer and select sharing.
Hope this helps.

Re:are you trying to get access to the pc with the admin account when the admin accoutn is already logged in?
try creating a new, maybe just gues user account on the machines and see if you can get access that way?
only a thought, not really into networking but itll only take about 5 minutes totry..
Re:Try re-naming the workgroup that both machines belong to. It shouldn't make a difference, but why not at this point?
Re:ok i singed on as the admin and tried it, them i decided to just completly uninstall zone alarm and try again. still nothing
Re:Another thing to check is that the Zone Alarm service has terminated when you shut it down.
Re:Try logging in as Admin just in case.
Re:not logged on as the administrator but my accounts on both computers have administative permissions.
