Q: I have a HP 6470z. It is always slowwer all the time. Takes forever to boot. And Ive started a lot of mistakes get bluescreen, most of them are like me using internet explorer 5.5. If the system slowly I started to upgrade to a Pent III 500 (got a Pent II 400) with a golden ball. I also traded outside the 96 megs of ram for 512 MEG (not the cheap stuff, 2 256meg sticks) 0.

I went through all the steps. Put everything in config.sys, freed from everything from the Start menu, even did a ctrl-alt-del and made sure everything was the properties box I only have 70-75% free resources at startup closed.

In. Is there something Im missing? I hate to reload everything.

Re:There are various tweaks to speed up systems running Windows 98. Try Speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net) for registry tweaks. Also, don't allow Windows to manage your virtual memory. Set both settings to double your ram (1024 in your case). Speedguide will tell you all the other settings to try. I don't think they will help. It sounds like you need to reinstall windows. Also, listen to everybody about the RAM. I understand the problem started before you installed the ram, but you will really have problems in the future since your motherboard does not support this much ram. The bios may recognize it, but it will not know how to manage it correctly. Hope this helps.

Re:Well, the only other things I could suggest is that first you try the Internet Explorer Repair Tool. Go to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Internet Explorer 5.5 and click on Delete. Don't worry, it won't delete anything. It will bring up a screen asking you if you want to remove a component or repair the current installation. Choose the repair option. After it's finished, reboot.

Check your virtual memory settings, too. Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties. Select the Performance Tab. If "Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory" isn't checked, check it. I'd also go to Dos and delete my swap file and let Windows recreate it on bootup (the win386.swp file). It might be corrupted. Deleting it causes no harm…Windows will automatically recreate it. Do it from Dos, though.

Re:I have 5.6 gig of 12 free on my hard drive. All the blue screen errors and slow downs started before I added memory. I added the memory to try and stop some of them. I am going to get a copy of GHOST 2001 and back-up my hard drive to CD and then format and reload to see if this helps.

Re:I hope this is the definitive word on the subject. Your PC's motherboard has the Intel 440ZX chipset, which has some inherent limitations. One of them is your total memory capacity. It's not important that the bios sees the memory, it's important that your board doesn't have the ability to deal with it. I did a Google search on the 440zx chipset specs and memory limitations. Virtually every site returned with a 256mb limitation built-in to the chipset itself. Abit claimed to be able exceed Intel's specification of the 256mb limit with their ZM6 motherboard, but that's Abit we're talking about, not HP. You're only asking for problems that you've already seen by trying to utilize the 512mb of Ram on this motherboard. It's own specs say 256, as does virtually every other source on the subject. Personally, I'd upgrade the board to use the memory. The 440ZX is a 440BX's poor step-child, meaning less capability with some of the same features. It was considered a choice for "entry-level" pc's. And it hasn't survived, unlike the 440BX, which, even though ancient by upgrade standards, has withstood the test of time and now, with enhancements, rivals anything more current out there.

Re:How much hard drive space do you have free? Sounds like a loaded drive to me. For best performance, you should have at least 20% free on each drive.

Re:Maybe you have 2 different problems.

Did you try reinstalling windows as sonyboy851 recommended? Sounds like some app has mucked up a file.

If blue screens started after you installed the new ram follow guy's advice. Even though system recognizes the 512 ram it may be making ur system unstable.

Re:the system finds the memoery just fine. The problem was happening before I put in the new memory. I put it in to try to speed things up.

Re:Note: Your PC's specs say that it has a Maximum Memory capacity of 256MB! See the following web page:

HP 6470Z Specs (http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hppavilion9404&LC=personal_computin g&Tfile=bph04777#P9_162)

Try removing a stick of ram and see what happens with 256M. If you still have problems, swap the other 256 stick and try that.

However, your specs say it can handle 2-128mb sticks vs. 1-256mb stick, so you still might have problems even though one stick isn't exceeding max capacity.

Re:what would be the best program to back up my hard drive with so that I can come back later and pull the files off that I need? ( like address books, write files, explore data, ect.)

Re:when was the last time you reinstalled windows. i have installed it 13 times in the last 3 years. it really helps every time. gets rid of junk that you never use that takes up system resources. but use the win cd, not a quick restore. the quick restores load all kinds of poopy (couldnt use the other word) software that is really BAD.

well hope you have fun reinstalling!! dont forget to back stuff up. (i sugjust partitions)

Re:I did all of this. System still super slow. I also run defrag weekly and scandisk at the same time.

Re:Under Start/Run, type msconfig. This will bring up a configuration utility window. Go to the startup tab and look to see how many programs have their boxes checked so they start with windows. You can remember or write down what progs have their boxes selected and restore it later.

You can uncheck ALL of the boxes, restart your PC and then check the state of your system resources. You should typically have 90+ % free.

You can also add a REM before selected lines in your c:\autoexec.bat file to prevent them loading. I cant tell you which, because I dont know whats in there. Try this especially for your anti-virus program(s).
