help me decide what to get socket A processor [ecs k7s5a] [dimm slots]

Q: Hi everyone, just ordered a

I of the Shuttle-N35N Ultras that “sale” for $ 50 at Newegg to my old not want to replace both DIMMs must recognize slots.

I Which processor to decide. Im considering a Barton XP2500 + @ 333 MHz, $ 90. But Im not going to buy new memory in the short term, and what I have now is a bunch of PC2100 (256 x 3). Im assuming that the asynchronous memory bus can run with FSB. Is this true? I read some where (it was a kind of vague) that although it is possible there will be a performance hit (how big?) 0.

My other options are 2) just a cheap Duron and wait till FX64 or whatever the next generation, or 3) use the old processor, an XP1600 + and wait until the prices fall. If option 3), Does anyone have experience processors removed without removing the HS fan first? I have some Arctic Silver lying around, but Id rather not through cleaning the path and reapplying the grease as it can be avoided.

I think option 4) would be a processor with memory bus speed on my line .

I get are not interested in overclocking the CPU.

I enough parts (if I get another CPU) to two computers, so I prefer that.

I m trying to do the cheap.

Tell me what you think,

Thanks

edit: PC2700 to PC2100 have changed thats what I really

Best Answer: E8400 doesn't need a P35 board. Use an X48 board. I just built a rig with an Asus X48 Rampage Formula Board, 2 4870s in Crossfire and 4 GBs of Corsair Dominator DDR 2 1066. Maxes Crysis out at all very high settings. I wasn't about ready to pay a lot more to run DDR3. If you wanna build a high-end rig then wait and use a Nehalem cpu that, according to Intel, is due out some time in September and put it on an X58 board thats coming out for the Nehalems which aren't 775 cpus.
If you still wanna build a rig now go with this board:

Spendy but thats life if you want to use a good DDR3 board. with eSata and Wi-Fi. I suggest you read reviews on P35 DDR3 boards. For some reason the P35 chipset doesn't give you much of a performance bump using DDR3 instead of DDR2. Also runs Crossfire at X16/X4. X48 runs both slots at X16. One of the reasons I went with an X48 board. X4 and X8(P45) cant handle the massive bandwith of the 4870s DDR5 memory which I confirmed with ATI before choosing my board. Here's a review of that Asus board I suggested:

Re:That should work fine, I ran mine async for a while until I could get PC3200 RAM. The AthlonXP isn't terribly memory bandwidth hungry to begin with. If you run dual channel you'll have even less problems running async.

You can run a 333fsb with 2100 no prob. I used to run it until I grabbed my OCZ 3200. You can run 3:2 at 11×200 if you really want to. There isn't as huge a performance decrease as many people say, and its an easy way to get a really fast processor while using your current RAM

woohoo! Thanks, Barton, here i come.

I would suggest selling the PC2100 stuff on the FS forum and buying some PC3200 stuff. It will be an enormous performance boost both for the CPU (guyer clock speeds) and for the memory.

If you insist on keeping the slow memory, I think the XP2200+ was the last CPU to use the 133mhz bus.

hi,

Thanks for your replies.

Do you know what will happen if I plug a 333 MHz FSB CPU in with PC2100 memory? I'd like to get the Barton now, and maybe later upgrade when my bank account clears. The memory I have isn't brand name, so I doubt I'd get much for it.

If you don't plan on overclocking, your PC2700 will be fine for a Barton 2500+. I would reccomend that chip as it's the best price/perfomance option as of right now.

ack, I spoke too soon … the memory is actually only PC2100.
