Help me with my desktop Dell Axim + Wireless equipment (wireless router). [linksys wireless b router] [setup a wireless network]
Q: I have a Dell Axim X30 bought last week and because it has built-in WiFi, I have a wireless network. So my question is: what is the best wireless G router for home use? I had a Linksys Wireless B router and man, I hated that thing. When I discovered that I was not the only problems encountered and discussions with thousands of users hate it (on dslreports.com). Anyways, Im guessing Linksys has improved since then (when a Cisco company)? Or not? How is Netgear? Or other brands you can recommend? I want something relatively easy to install and safe enough, but will not break the budget. I have 2 PCs at the moment and a Dell Axim X30 (may add a laptop.)
Thanks all.
Best Answer: So it seems you have DSL that connects to the telephone line. To use DSL you must have a filter on every telephone plug in the house, even ones without a phone just now. Without these the phone and the internet confict with each other.
Now about the wifi. My guess is you have just a DSL modem. This does not have the ability to give you wifi. You need to buy a wifi or wireless modem. The instructions will give you the step by step instructions. Most come with a CD that helps you connect.
Now, in the rare case that you may have a DSL modem that ALSO has a wifi router attached, get out the manual. Generally you must have the SSID (router name) and the security key. Sometimes this is on a label on the router/modem. Then Click the wifi icon at lower right, click View all Networks, then find Setup Wireless Network. Follow that to give the computer the SSID and security key. That should do it.
Re:I tried the new Linksys WRT54GS G/B router the other week with my Ipaq which uses 802.11b like your Ipaq. It was the one with the SpeedBooster function on it and it and it seemed to perform better than my old 802.11b (which had a signal booster unit on it) in speed, range, and consistency of connection in 802.11b mode (I don't have any G devices so I couldn't test that). Cnet gives it a good review but doesn't like the old G version without speedbooster.
Re:I have the DLink DI-524 wireless G router and it works great. It was on sale at CompUSA when I was there so I bought it. The next week I noticed they had a good deal on Linksys routers. Sometimes it's best to see what deals are out there.
Re:I was using the the Netgear MR814v2. It was very easy but you might want to try this site and look at what other people are have luck with.
