How do I change music / photo folders? [start menu] [folders]

Q: I am a part of a domain at work, and as such, my documents are always synchronized with the server. Music and photos are part of documents, but I do not want them to synchronize and stay on the server (for obvious reasons), so I made Foder C: Music and C: Photographs and this is where my stuff 0.

Now I want the links in the to link to * my * files, not the default settings. In XP I would just location, but in Vista it shows me the location (that is my user folder on the server work) and not a “select target” button or something to make me change folder.

Ive searached a bit, and found different ways of editing the registry of common (Shell and User Shell ), but do not do what I want.

Can someone tell me how to change?

Best Answer: i think it can't be done..

My picture and my musics should be in the same drive as windows..

Re:guy – I see what you mean. I am not the admin unfortunately, but it is hardly like anything is forced on me. Can this setting be adjusted on an individual level (I undesrand why he would want this disabled for most of the users).

Yep, he should be able to change the policy at the user, group, or computer level no problem…

Re:It is my personal machine, but you make a very valid point – do I really need to be joined to the domain? What are the benefits (the cons I have experienced many times). Thinking about it, the only tangible benefit that I get is that my documents are always synced with the domain so I don't have to worry about backing up the most important data. But, theoretically, I could do everything I do now even if I wasn't connected to the domain, right? I could get access to the proxy, I could get access to exchange, I could get access to the shares on the server, only I would have to make sure I back up on my own. Is this right?

Re:Is it really your machine (did you pay for it?) If it is, you may consider not joining it to the domain in the first place. If it isn't, you probably shouldn't be using it for personal stuff (ie, music and photos).

Ok, so could I change it on the domain server? How would I do this?

Rant: I don't get why the hell it restricts me from moving stuff around on my own machine, just cos I am a part of a domain!!!! Fsck!!

A) It sounds like the domain policy is disallowing you to make the change. Are you a domain admin? If so, you can simply allow users to make these changes if you view them as beneficial.

B) Understand that in a domain environment its not "your machine" its controlled member of the domain. The administrators of the domain decide, bluntly, what you can and can't do with the system. It's the OS's job to enforce these restricitions.

I do have a location tab, but I don't have any options to change it – i.e. it shows me a full path (which is on the server, in my user folder) but I can't move it to anything else.

Because you are part of a domain and the domain admis get to decide where ths goes…

Re:When you right click on a music, videos or documents folder it doesn't have a "location" tab under properties? It does for me. I moved all my data over to my second, storage drive. I like using the default since apps that behave well use them and it's very convenient. But I don't want them hogging all that space on my raptor. Works better on my Seagate 7200.10.
