How do I know whether my router firewall? [empire earth] [addictions]
Q: I have on my new router (Linksys) for a few weeks now and have absolutely no problems with getting online to play games or something similar. I really thought I should work more problems with the built-in firewall and my addiction to online gaming, Counter Strike, Unreal Tournament, Empire Earth and like.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!
Best Answer: You are making the same mistake I was making! Having too many firewalls up is going to slow you down and conflict with many things, for me it did not allow me to do wireless networking. What you should do is have your primary computer that connects to the outside world have a firewall on it or if all your computers are connected via a router, have that router have a firewall set up and nothing else. This is what I did and it helped.
If it is indead your firewall on your router causing the port forwarding problems, I would say you should disable it. I don't think it will be that harmful. Although you are not suppose to, I have disabled firewalls in the past temporarily till I was able to get everything up and running. In my opinion I don't think it will hurt anything, unless you are an IT guy in charge of a major network at work then that may be an issue. I have kept my firewall down for weeks before and had no problems with my home network. As long as your virus protection is up to date, It probally isn't all that harmful.
Re:Another decent website that checks for your port open/closed status is GRC.com (http://www.grc.com/) and use the Shields Up! test.
Damn, people beat me to it by 2ms.
Re:Your router doesn't have a true firewall (ACL's).
It is referred to as a natural firewall because cannot see your internal IP addresses, they only see the 1 IP address assigned to your WAN interface.
False advertisement really..
Re:Logging to the following links, will provide you a fare eval. of your "Protection:
First log here, scroll down, and do both:
Test My Shlieds! Prob My Ports!
Shields Up! (http://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2)
Then Log here (it tests more ports):
Remote Security Tester. (http://www.mycgiserver.com/servlet/kalish.Security)
Re:Go and have your setup tested Here (http://www.dslreports.com/secureme)
Re:Your router doesn't actually have a firewall. It does network address translation. Because this makes external attacks on internal system significantly harder, all SOHO router vendors advertise firewalling capabilities that aren't really there. There is no way to check if it is working, but you don't have to, because if it isn't working, you can't connect out.
