How do you track an IP address? [56k modem] [software program]
Q: Hi all.
I wonder if there is a software program that the IP addresses of persons who subscribed to my computer.
I will let my track seconardary machine parts and without a password. I went online with a 56k modem. When I go to shut down my computer “6 users are currently connected to your computer, you would still closed.” I was like “what ?!?!?!” Then I realized that someone had logged off the net on the computer, because I forget to set passwords.
Not only that, she showed me this line of WIN.INI and a worm virus.
“run = c: windows instit.bat, c: windows scrsvr. exe, c: windows Brasil.pif, c: windows alevir.exe, c: Windo, Marco!. scr, c: windows Brasil.exe “
I want to track these bastards and give the names of FBI . Thanks for your help.

Re:Ignoring the fact that the FBI does not care how ignorant you are in the ways of the internet, teaching you how to get this information properly and keep things sane and sanitized enough to be able to hand over the information/hardware to the FBI would take way too long and Id be wasting money giving away the information for free (assuming I knew it all of course

Re:Install NetBEUI, and use it for Local Traffic.
NetBEUI is not Routable to the Internet, and only needs bind it, since it does not use a number scheme like TCP/IP there is less probability for mistakes.
The trick is to bind TCP/IP only as a Client to Microsoft Networks, and to bind the File, and Printer Sharing only to NetBEUI.
Doing so decrease the probability of your files been world wide available through the Internet.
In my experience (on variety of small network settings) shows that Surfing the Internet is smoother if the main network traffic is done via NetBEUI, and TCP/IP is reserved to Internet activities only.

And yes, even if you did track down the IPs and figure out who they belong to the MOST that would happen is their ISP would cut them off but chances are unless you contact your ISP first and have them do the leg work then nothing will happen at all.

Re:There's a few dozen trojans/worms out there that will scan thousands of IP's for certain services and try to exploit them. For most ordinary people, no one should have any services running on your Internet IP. Block them ALL with a firewall, or turn them off. If you need to run a service of some sort, be sure you know what you're doing and secure it properly.
Law enforcement does not care if your computer gets owned either, by leaving an insecure service running you're inviting anyone on the internet to do what they will with it.

Dial In IPs are assigned randomly every time you log in.
That means that 6 people were randomly scanning at about the same time the band of IPs that is used by your provider to find exposed computers on Dialup ?????
In any case a simple free Firewall (like Zone Alarm) will protect you from such occurrences, password or not.
Or at least, install NetBEUI, and unbind TCP/IP from the sharing.

If you get solid info the worst that might happen is their ISP will drop them, I doubt the FBI will do a thing.
