How much protection to offer router firewalls? [protection from internet threats] [wireless router]

Q: I have the Belkin Pre-N and the box is that a hardware firewall built much protection against Internet threats that do me? Hypothetically I could off my desktop without a software firewall (like ZoneAlarm)?

there are so many tools out there that can bypass nat.

From the outside? Like what?

I know NAT doesn't protect you when you initiate contact with a shady site, but I don't think there is much that can get into nat without ports forwarded or inside->out initiated connection.

That's certainly my understanding. If you're intelligent in your computer usage, NAT has always been sufficient in my experience. That said, an SPI firewall and/or software firewall certainly can't hurt.

Re:really NAT is no longer secure….there are so many tools out there that can bypass nat.

when you buy a router/fw, look for a stateful inspection fw, it's better than just NAT.

SPI, is a feature available in many consumer level FWs now, and cheap too….so I suggest that if you're getting a router/fw, why not just spend a couple bucks more and get SPI instead?

hope this helps.

Re:Hmm.. I would say that Router?s NAT Firewall is an excellent tool to start with.

However it covers only about 40% of the prospective trouble that is associated in general with having an Internet Broadband connection, and only 20% in cases of careless surfer that visits ?Junk? Sites.

It is not uncommon that I have to remove ?Junk? units in hundreds form client?s computers that use only Router/NAT protection.

Re:I agree with weaver — nat protection really is a wonderful thing. I have an old wired router I keep around for just that purpose — I won't plug a computer into the (semi-public) network unless it's protected by nat or a software firewall. Nat is just easier though

Re:Most of those "hardware firewalls" are really just NAT (network address translation). Nat is actually fairly good protection, and I ran my XP box without a s/w firewall inside my nat for years. The only reason to run S/W firewall inside your nat would be to protect you from other things inside the nat (other PC's).
