how the CD drive does not spin up so much? [game cd] [cd check]

Q: Firstly, there is a program, or another way the CD drive spinning up (temporarily halt and prevent the comp, because it does) every time I look at a directory tree?
also, is there a way to make the drive spin down when they do not have to read? (I am tired of spin up to be really loud just to play a CD to check something and then it takes a few minutes after his idle before it runs down.

Re:I saw this program on Shellcity (http://shellcity.net), but I've never tried it. YMMV. cdromtool (http://freehost03.websamba.com/cdromtool/)

Re:My guess is it depends on your brand of drive. My Teac has a utility download that I can use to adjust certain settings like spin down time. I forget now but I think mine is adjustable from 15 seconds to 2 minutes.

I don't know of any way of adjusting the spin up. Your OS makes calls to the cd for info.

What OS are you running?

Re:guy thats something that I really hate and I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread :)

Re:depends on the drives support, I know my plextor has options for such things. also if its making the whole thing studder you may want to think about moving it to its own ide header, or simply getting a better cdrom. But as for 3rd party software, I did see one once but it tended to lock up win98, its only supported system. That was years ago anyway I haven't used winder9x in a long time. Good luck with that I know i can certainly be annoying. oooo also might want to look at a cd caching program, I've heard they word mighty well.

Re:I don;t know of a specific utility to do that, I simply don't keep CD's in the drive(s).
