How to install new hard drive in your PC? [load windows] [retail version]
Q: Looking for bad HDD with a new hard drive to replace existing system. Would be sufficient to install the bare drive and retail version should I get? What software do I need to install the HDD? Do they (naked or retail) come with software? When I load Windows CD?
Thanks
guy
Best Answer: What version of BIOS do you have. There is a setting on the PCs I work on that we have to set to legacy before the PCs will take an image, you might have a similar issue. Also, I would check the jumpers on the HDD to make sure it is configured to be a master. There should be a label on the hard drive if you don't know how to do this.
Re:The WIN98/2k/ME disks are bootable. You have to set your cdrom drive as the primary boot device in the bios.
Depending on what bios you have you would press F2, Del, Ctrl-alt-enter to get into the bios. If your bios supports setting different boot devices too.
To connect most Hard Drives you would connect the flat cable (IDE) to the Hard Drive. There is a blank spot on the plug that corresponds to the drive, match them up and plug it in. Then there is a power plug which should have 4 sockets to match the 4 pins on the drive. The plug is bevelled so match it up as well.
***Have the system unplugged from the power before you start opening it up, you wouldn't want to release any magic smoke.
If you have a major manufacturers made system you should be able to access their website for details about the bios.
Hope some of this helps.
Re:I think cannot be simpler than this :
1. Hook everything right
2. Auto Detect from BIOS
3. Use FDISK from a BOOT DISK
4. CREATE PRIMARY PARTITION
5. *RESTART*, Format (as instructed by Fdisk)
6. Use POWERQUEST PARTITION MAGIC 6.0… yayy!
Hope that help…

Other simpler method, of course : Call PC technician 'n spend some Buck$ …

Re:You might want to do a search to find manual to print so you can do it right. Not say that others are wrong, but when you try to explain something to someone with limited experience it tends to get washed up somewhere down the line. What's also a good idea is if you know someone that has done this sort of thing before, get him or her over and watch what they do. Then next time you'll know what to do.
Re:Can you boot with Win98 CD or Win2000 CD? how do you Fdisk and format?
Re:A bare bones drive is fine. before you take out your old disk back up your files and make a boot disk. Power off unplug power cable. Remove internal power cable and ide cable from drive unscrew drive, and remove. Take new drive make sure it is on master (jumper on the back) if this is your os drive, mount it in the case, plug in ide and power, put on the case and boot off floppy. Fdisk and format then run windows install. Alternative method. A lot of the newer OS have bootable cd's that will automate the format and the fdisk which makes it a tad easier for newbies. Hope this helps.
