I need that called 2 gigabytes! How? [disk partition] [swap disk]

admin / December 12th, 2010/ Posted in Operating Systems / No Comments »

Q: On my C: drive primary, I only gave five performances for Windows and applications.
OOPS not enough space!

I have:

C: 5 appearances – and apps
e OS: 500 MB – some dumb old partition in Windows 98 that I need to get rid of!
f: 29 appearances – all my STUFF
UNPARTITIONED 2 gigs – I need this!

I am on Windows XP Pro SP1

How, I conclude that the unpartitioned 2 gigs for my primary OS partition?
And How do I E: 500 C partition and claim that too?
I dont want to reformat and lose all my data on drive C, which is in demand, too much stuff to open it again. So how can I ensure that the operation and the remaining space to add?

BTW, I tried Partition Magic 8 and had no luck with her, but I Init Error 117. And I do not think it really necessary for what I do not want to do?

My suggestion was going to be to simply create an empty folder on your C: drive (since it's NTFS) and then mount the extra 2 Gigs to it. You could have even named the folder "Documents and Settings" or "Program Files" (after temporarily renaming your other one(s)) and then moved you current stuff there and probably have room to spare on the new 2Gig partiton and also the main part of your C drive.

Joei did that once for bf1942 since after i install everything its +3gig

Try Ranish Partition Manager. I've never had trouble with it, and best of all, it's free.

Partition Manager 2.44 (138k) June 09, 2002. Beta-Beta-Beta.
what version(s) have you tryed ? and on what OSes ?

I'm using 2.40. I only ever use the stable versions, just because I don't think I'm all that knowledgable when it comes to these kind of things.

better back it up anyway. even odds partition magic is going to hose everything anyway. guess the odds were better then even.
glad you got it back
Odd the only time I've ever had problems with partition magic was when I had a corrupted file system and didnt bother running chkdisk to repair it first (it was on a machine I was rebuilding anyways). Other than that it's worked great for me every time.

Re:WOW,
the past few days sucked.
ill make it simple.

1) Partition Magic = this is the second time ive tried it for something with my systems. both times it completely didnt work. stay away!

2) Acronis Partition – this program is EASY to use, however, it is deceptively easy. in my case, it looked as if it has completely doing exactly what i needed it to do as described above, until i rebooted, and everything was screwed up, i couldnt boot into windows. i started getting the 'hal.dll missing' and went through days of trying solutions. my data was intact on the drive, just couldnt get into the OS.

LUCKILY

3) Acronis TrueImage – is awesome and I backed up my C: before I did all this just in case. I never lost my data actually so it didnt make a difference. HOWEVER!!!! the important thing to note here is that for SOME reason, Acronis Partition Expert did NOT actually commit the changes I told in to make in getting drive C: those extra 2 gigs. It was TRUEIMAGE, when restoring my C: image (using a TrueImage bootCD) to try to fix the hal.dll program actually ASKED ME if i would like to resize the partition for C with free space from unallocated space or other partitions. It was in doing this that it actually got resized.

STILL, despite, reloading my backed up image, I could not yet boot in windows xp without those DLL errors after trying many things. So, I did a standard XP Installation Repair, which worked, and am now reinstalling updates/drivers. But all my old programs and stuff are still installed.

So all in all, I didnt lose all my stuff, I got my extra gigabytes, but I lost alot of sleep and time.
Acronis TrueImage is kind of the MVP here not so much for its backup capabilities but for its hidden Partition Management bonuses!

(just wanted to write this out if anyone comes back searching with similar problems)

Thanks for your tips people.

Re:What are the format types of each partition? i.e. NTFS, FAT, FAT32… etc.

Post that and I might be able to give you a work around… depending on how they are formatted

Joe

Re:Dont use fat32. Stick with NTFS, youll be a whole lot happier. And now we might actually be able to fionally figure out what we didint know about NTFS ala microsoft leakage.

Re:I have been looking that up and maybe the old FAT16 500 meg partition might be causing the Partition Magic Init error.
Can you at least tell me how to safely delete that partition?

I thought I could doing it through XP Disk Management.
But it the extra F: partition and that little 500 meg E partition I guess are somehow 'joined together' on a LOGICAL DRIVE. I dont know much about that. But it seems I can only delete the whole LOGICAL DRIVE and not just that one little partition within it.

Re:yes it is neccisary, you would need an application like partition magic to do what you are trying to do. Were it me in your situation I would start to look into the partition magic error and try to get it fixed so the drive partitions could be rearranged and resized.
