I should probably know but . [nforce 4] [athlons]

Q: Hi all:

The message title and topic summary pretty much say it all, but Ill ask anyway.

Some of you know I have to contend with a 4 socket mobo 939/nForce decision for the last few days in a new build system which I have all the components except Motherboard/CPU.

Now I thought I had decided on the Athlon / “Winchester” / Socket 939 / 3000 +, but a lot of people have asked whether I view the new Venice “core net, which, among other things, will support SSE3 instruction set from Intel to offer.

My question is this:

Does the mobo chip (or chipset) to “support” for the new Venice core , or does one just to have a socket 939 mobo?

Or is something that will be addressed by mobo makers with BIOS revisions?

Im almost convinced to buy a nForce4 (probably ULTRA) / Socket 939 mobo instead of a VIA K8T890 chipset / socket 939.

So if I now or in future decide to purchase a “Venice” core Athlon, I will ” good “to go with a bus 939/nForce4 (non-Ultra or Ultra)?

Best Answer: Tiger Direct has some good barebones kits. You could build something in the range from $200 to over $1000. If you need advice picking one from their, just post the info.

Edit: Sounds like you could get by with something pretty cheap. Mine only cost about $225 and I can play things like Sims2 with all expansions very well.

This has been asked many times (by me too :P ) and the only way to be absolutely sure is to contact the mobo manufacturer directly. Just send them an email, they are usually very friendly and quick.

Thanks, that sounds like very good advice !

Long time lurker/reader, but I'm wondering the same thing. I'm ordering a Venice core and want to get the MSI K8N Neo2 (have AGP 6800GT)
http://www2.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130468

Any idea if this board would recongize the Venice? Or woudl require a BIOS update? I really don't want to get a board that won't be able to run the new core.

Thanks in advance.

Follow these steps:

1. Download the newest bios for the board that you are interested in and the flash utility. the bios update download (http://us-download.msi.com.tw/support/bos_exe/mbd_bios/7025v15.zip)

2. Create a bootable floppy or cd

3. Build the machine

4. Install the cpu and try to bootup if it isn't recognized then use the floppy you created.

5. Done.

Thanks Night, that clears up a lot of questions !!!

Greg

Special Note: Some motherboards won't post without a CPU they can recognize while others will just run at a slow default.

Best to contact your motherboard maker { which ever your interested in buying } to find out what will happen if you install Venice on a mobo that has an older bios.

Dunno, but I think it would boot and detect the cpu incorrectly.

Edit: As in it would work but the MB would detect it as another core.
