IBM Deskstar hard drives: “Cover this hole? [ibm deskstar] [harddrive]

Q: My hard disk has a small hole on top of it, and theres a label below the hole with an arrow saying “Do not cover this hole.” And Im just curious, what will happen if I do cover?

Re:Thanks for the additional info. Since they all work for MS, and in the future I'll let Bill Gates worry about their sustenance.

Re:Hard drives are sealed to keep dust out. I've heard it said that the speed of a hd relative to size would be like a 747 plane taking off the runway and landing within a second. Any dust colloiding with your heads would wipe out the drive. The hole is there to equalize the atmospheric pressure and as someone stated to equalize pressure due to heat expansion. Some hd's have what looks like a little maze leading upto the hole and some have a little filter. P.S. the little guy that spins the drive doesn't live there, he's in the floppy. Occasionally he moves into a zip or super disk. The gal he's having an affair with is in the cd and his children cause the machine problems and work for M$.;)

Re:Well, maybe I just found out why my HD failed. I was occasionally pouring a little drink into the hole for the guy who spins the drive.

It's also so IBM have something to blame all the failures on…."you must have covered the hole….that's whats done it…"

If that weren't so horrifyingly true (well, in Compaq's case, anyway) it would be funny.

thats where it goes the bathroom.

(ROFL!)

i thought it needs it to fart..? <— i think that's a more suitable answer because it deals with the air…

Re:thats where it goes the bathroom.

Re:When a hard drive spins (5400 or 7200RPM) it creates heat. The air needs to expand and contract to cope with the temperature differences. That is why there is a hole that you don't want to cover it will build pressure. Hope that helps.

Re:Trust me, I would if I could. I have a new drive coming anyways, but the problem is that the current drive is fried and the bios can no longer even find it once plugged in.
Now I know this kind of destroys my need for knowing what it does, but the curiosity is killing me :P
