Re:<< friend of mine actually connected an IDE cable from mobo to the sound card not knowing what he was doing, and the IDE cable started smoking and actually melted some of the plastic insulation… i'd recommend NOT plugging stuff in just cuz it fits unless you read where, what, and why to plug in >>
The soundblaster cable has the same number of conductors as an ATA33 IDE cable, except two of the pins are blocked on the connectors. This is to stop the cable from being plugged in the wrong way round and sending the power supply (3v, 5V, 12V? – pin1) down a signal conductor.
However.. if you have lost your soundblaster cable, DO NOT use an IDE cable because if you do happen to connect it the wrong way round you get the IDE cable smoke effect, as quoted, and also burn holes in your soundblaster pcb. (Yes.. I did it too) I think this may have also damaged the mobo as the slot always caused problems afterwards. This BE6 finally died a year later and took 2 P3's with it..one of them a 2 month old 850 :Q
..learned quite alot since then though..;)

Re:inside a pc is a definite non smoking zone! :Q
Re::D Thanks for the info. I think I will avoid plugging anything into.
Re:The IDE cable smoked!?!?! Wow . . . that's pretty cool

Re:I think you're referring to the livedrive connector. It's used to connect . . . a LiveDrive. That's just a port for the front of the machine that has knobs and ports (sound stuff) on it. It's not an IDE connector though.
