IE Service Pack 1 and the missing icons [service pack 1] [menu section]
Q: Man Alive, I recently installed sp1 for IE and I realized that all my icons are missing from the pull-down menu / section on the left of the window. For example, in IE when I click on the word Favorites at the top, all icons and favorites are there but when I click the star favorites that represents the short menu on the left side of the shows favorites but all the folder, ie icons are gone! Whats even stranger is that in Windows Explorer or My Computer, the folder menu on the left is the usual folder icons are missing! What happened? What can I do? Thanks to everyone in advance could shed some light for me!
Best Answer: You can't customize or change the icon for IE7. It was never there in the first place. I just checked in XP SP2.
Also, the checkbox has been removed from the security update.
For now, you can also use TweakUi.exe (run from the RUN dialog box) to restore the icon:
You can direct download TweakUI here

Then click this option:

Re:Hammer,
Thanks for telling how to get that Star icon for favorites. It was there to be added but I had not noticed it. In MSN Explorer that is the default icon for Favorites. ![]()

Re:On IE 6, I have a star which represents favorites. This must be turned off on your configuration through view, toolbar, customize. The 'favorites' is turned on so that the star is in the toolbar. This problem just exists for the history toggle as well. Even when in windows explorer, the menu on the left that shows the folder tree has all its icons missing—– you know, the little folder icons!! Somewhere there must be an option to turn on and off the icons but I cannot find the RIGHT one. Is that a little better?? Thanks!

Are you confusing the history button with the Favorites menu? I have a history button in IE6. When I click on the History button a panel on the left side pops up and shows a history of all the web sites I have visited recently. Mine shows the little icons and the name of the web site.
I see two icons for history that are LAST WEEK and Monday. It has a VIEW button so you can select how you want the History items listed. Mine also has a Search button.
The History button is a toggle for on/off the History listing. ![]()

Re:Hey, thanks for looking out for me. I do not have MSN explorer. I'm talking about the plain old microsoft internet explorer that is integrated with xp, me, 98, etc. At the top of the page you have the words file, edit, view, favorites, history, groups, etc. . Just below them is the tool bar with the icons 'back' 'foreward' 'delete' 'refresh' 'home' 'FAVORITES'!!!! and etc. Favorites is a star shaped icon and when clicked, a sidebar pops up on the left with all the web links. Before, (I can't remember how far back) the links had their related icon or folder in front of it showing what it was about. NOW it is just text with no icon for simple people like me to look at. It is really nothing but it is something to not have it there when you are used to using it on a daily basis. Anymore ideas??? Thanks

Re:Hammer,
The star icon appears with MSN Exlorer 7.1 or later. Not in Internet Explorer.
In MSN Explorer 7.1 I see that there is an upgrade to version 8 but the only way I have seen to get it is to subscribe to the MS ISP or whatever they call it. Anyone know how to download or upgrade to MSN Explorer 8?
I have a DSL ISP and do not need another ISP.
In Explorer click on View/Explorer Bar/Folders.
When you say "STAR" do you mean the little X in the upper rightcorner?

Re:Well at least someone stepped up to the plate! Thanks but still to no avail. The task bar was working fine. The folders on/off works but all the folders appear as text with a + sign next to it if it has subfolders AND all the little folder icons are missing. This happens in IE when I click on the 'star' in the toolbar area. All the favorites appear on the left side menu that pops up but all the folder and blue 'e' icons are missing. More bumpy cake please!

Re:Right click your mouse on the task bar. Select Properties in the menu that opens. In the Properties menu uncheck Hide Inactive Icons.
In My Computer, Explorer click on the button that says FOLDERS. It is a toggle. One time you click on it and it shows the drives and folders. Next time you click on the FOLDERS button it hides the left side drives & folders, etc. ![]()
