Inbox completley flooded with these virus emails! [stupid virus] [pop account]
Q: At work, we have a general information e-mail account that visitors to our website to ask us questions. Naturally accounts for the government as they are vulnerable to viruses and spam, and we were usually get 5 to 10 spam messages and 4 to 5 of the stupid virus e-mails with an attachment and a message saying something like, “Is this your photo ? “Recently, the virus e-mails on this account will have exploded, I got 482 of them over the weekend. It is a POP account that I check with Outlook Express. Is there any way that I or the hosting company to trace where the bulk of these messages come to the ISP of the offending emailer Report?
THANKS!

If I were you, I'd purchase a copy of Outlook and get Inboxer (http://www.inboxer.com/). I've been setting it up for clients and it has worked wonderfully.
Outlook 2003 does the same exact thing as Inboxer.

Re:Most of the time, the sender is not even aware of it. The viruses simply use the computer as a host and auto send to the host's complete address book. I find that if I know the person, I will tell them. Otherwise it is like pissing in the ocean. I use a spam blocking service that also blocks all viruses. Haven't had one get by them in 6 months. They are quarantined on my ISP's server – and I delete daily – sometimes as many as 200 spams a day.
Current laws are ineffective – most of the spam is foregin sources, and our laws do not apply to them. There are some good suggestions – all mail must be authenticated by the sender – that will help – and the otjer, certainly to be controlversial, is to charge a small fee for email. Bulk spammers would run up a big bill.

Re:well if you ever want to track an email you can try to start out by viewing the header information on the incoming email and that tells you the ip and such. problem is with that is that ip's can be spoofed and bounced off proxy servers to disguise their true identity. since you are using a program like outlook you can try downloading some spam filter software and stuff to toss those into the trash upon receiving them. we use a program here at work called IHateSpam which tends to work well for our needs. i suggest trying something like a spam blocker to stop the current spam that you have going on. good luck.
