Installation under Windows ME does not work . [cd support] [setup exe]
Q: I try to install Windows ME, and the setup.exe just freezes and does nothing. When I first boot, I see four options, help, start with CD support, Start w / o CD support, and something else (I forget what it was, but it was impotant not). I choose Start with CD support. I go to the CD drive (E:) and run Setup.exe. It just stays there and does nothing. I can still Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart, but it never enters setup. I used Fdisk a partition on the 80GB drive to create. Everyone knows the problem?
Best Answer: 1) Right-Click on "My Computer" and Select "Properties"
2) Goto "Advanced" Tab.
3) In the group-box "Startup and Recovery" click the "Settings" button (This is the setting button at the bottom of the page)
4) In the group-box "System startup" Click the "Edit Button"
5) NOW BE VERY CAREFUL
6) There opens the text editor with the title "boot.ini – notepad"
7) you see a number of lines in the file like:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI… Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
8-a) you may count the number of text lines after "[operating systems]". for example if you always boot with the 5th option at startup now count five lines from the tag "[operating systems]" and this is the only line you need to keep in this section of file
8-b) [RECOMMENDED] you see "partition(1)" in the example of (7) [Above]
NORMALLY: partition(1) means drive C:, partition(2) means drive D:, etc. You can examine this paths in the text editor with the real paths on your hard-disk and remove the invalid one(s).
9) Thats all save the file and have fun at your next reboot
Re:I was under the impression you are trying to boot off the cd. I dont think ME would let you do that. I think you need a 98 boot disk, then use it to start the install of ME. Get a bootdisk from bootdisk.com and use it. It will load a generic cd driver, then it will read the cd. Then type in C:setup or what ever drive you are going to use and it should take off.
Re:I've never had a real Microsoft Windows 9x cd boot me into anything but the install… The options you listed made me think you were using a floppy boot disk or something.
Re:Windows ME is the only chinese operating system I have (Yes, I need a chinese operating system, don't ask why). I'm booting from CD, but it won't start the installation.
Re:The first problem is you're trying to install Windows ME.
Why not boot from the cd to start the install?
