Internet in the new apartment that funky [wireless router] [new apartment]

admin / March 31st, 2011/ Posted in Hardware / No Comments »

Q: Anyway im in a townhouse with two other roomates. 2 bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. The cable modem is connected to my mac roomates downstairs and we have a to share the above. I think my internet is very unreliable because it will automatically turn off and again several times during the day. I dont know what is wrong if the other roommate is over these problems. Im running an external USB network adapter. Any idea why this one is if I cannot figure it out. Thanks

One common cause of this problem is when the properties for the wireless network connection are set to "Automatically connect to available wireless networks." I don't have wireless on this system, so I can't go in and tell you exactly what dialog, but if you are not using the wireless on a laptop and don't intend roaming, I would uncheck this option.

Also make sure that your home network is set as the default connection for the client. You may very well be picking up other nearby nets that are from time to time better choices (in terms of signal strength) than your own.

Lastly, I cured some connection stability issues in our own network by turning off the wireless zero configuration service.

Edit: just to clarify, these are changes you make on each of the wireless clients. The only thing I have seen cause issues like this on the router side is turning off SSID broadcast, which XP doesn't seem to like. Some people like to turn it off because it is supposedly more secure, but afaik hackers can discover it anyway. I recommend leaving SSID broadcast on, but changing the name from 'default' to something less obvious, and of course, enable WEP on your router and clients, at least.

WOW…I turned off the wireless zero service and there have been no issues since and my speed has gone up a whole lot. Thanks for the help!

Re:do you guys think it could be the fact that the router is a linksys and the adaptor is a belkin and they are not liking each other?
