Is there someone I can talk on AIM? [cable modem] [aim]
Q: I do not know what to do . My computer works fine plugged into my cable modem strait. More than good actually. But when I try to route the signal on and off ever 2 minutes. It sucks! I have a Linksys 4-port wired router. Are there certain settings I need to get the router to be reliable? When I connect to the router in use, usually loses when I reset everything in it works, but to do that every 2 minutes is ridiculous. Should I change a setting?
Best Answer: they're status is set to invisible, so they're really online, it just makes them look offline.

Re:i "fixed" the problem… the router still wont work strait out of the modem, however, i had an old P3 laying around and i just went from the modem to the old computer then from the old comp to the router.

Re:guy: the MS routers work fine without the client software installed; the only thing that you need that installed for is to update the router's firmware.
rockguitardude: it's almost certainly a bad router; i've had that happen myself before. Definitely borrow a friend's, or go buy one from a return-friendly place like Best Buy, to confirm.

Re:What router is thast? NEVER heard of that before!
I would NEVER use a router that required special software on the PC's. My guess would be it would work fine without the software. makes no sense.

Easy Network Wiring
Re:1) when i was having problems i made sure to update the firmware
2) i also tried switching from auto-neg w/ my onboard lan card to no avail
seems to me its just a bad router :frown:

Re:Also, try to hard-set your network card's speed and duplex to 100Mb/s, full duplex. It's possible that it's auto-negotiating wrong with the switch and then it's getting reset when there are too many port errors that come in.

Re:Try updating the firmware. If that doesn't help then your looking at replacing it I'd think. It's not spyware.

Re:i had similar problems w/ my linksys 4 port wired router when hooked into my university network in my dorm room. the funny part is, while at home hooked directly into our cable modem it works just fine. i plan to get a new router by someone other than linksys for next year as i have heard linksys has some problems other than what i have experienced anyways.

Re:You need to scan ALL of your PC's with adaware, Spybot and make sure your AV is up to date.
My 1st guess is you have a lot of spyware and it is causing too many concurrent connects for your router, basically locking it up, this is why a reboot fixes it for a few mn, then craps out again.
My 2nd guess is your Linksys sucks, go and see if you can borrow a friends router for a little bit and see if the same thing happens.
