Lite-On DVD-ROM LTD163. Opinions? [cd rom drive] [top notch]
Q: Hi,
My Artec 56x CD-ROM drive is dying after only three (!) Months, so I simply go to a new station rather than getting. I was thinking of replacing it with a Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM drive LTD163. Who used this station for a while an opinion? From what Ive read, it seems to be a pretty hard drive, but again, everything I read about the Artec drive said it was top notch . thoughts or feelings? Even recommendations? Thanks.

Re:Ya, you know what? I take it back. Lite-On drive is a POS. Mine just broke down (for some reason, it will just no longer read any cd's) and getting ahold of lite-on for warranty service was mission impossible. I had to dig through my recepts and find the place I bought it from in order to get a replacement (although it was a retail box and lite-on should have covered for it, but they're in China and don't even have a phone number on their site).

Re:An update, DO NOT BUY A LITEON DRIVE. Mine is less than 6 months old and it is no longer working. This is not so bad as I could not contact Lite-On to get a replacement. There is no phone number on their web site and I couldn't even make sense of their product support site.

Re:The LiteOn DVDROMs are loud. I have used 5 of them in builds and they all sound the same. The noisest parts is the initial spinup and it sounds terrible. I would rather have the Afrey 10X or a Pioneer.

but beware it's only mediocre at DAE unlike the liteon!

Re:My friend recently purchased to Pioneer slot load drive. It isn't loud really. It makes some noise during the spin-up process, but that takes about 1 second. Anyway, back to the poster. The Lite-On drive is an excellent one. You can't beat it's quality for the price you can find it. It also has a 48x CD-ROM read speed, most DVD drives have a 40x read speed. If noise is a big concern of yours, go with a DVD-ROM drive from Toshiba. Their 16x drive is supposed to be really quiet.

Re:I also have a 16x DVD lite-on from NewEgg and it is fairly quiet.
On a side note ive only had it for about 2 weeks, but I'm very happy with it and have seen no problems.

Re:<< Ya mine too, certainly better than my old Pioneer DVD-116, that one blew up. >>
Actually, I just built a system with a Pioneer 116 and I don't find it too loud at all. IMHO it's a very nice drive.

Re:<< !!VERY LOUD!!, >>
are you sure your drive is ok as I find mine reasonably quiet!
Re:!!VERY LOUD!!, it gets so annoying, especialy when watching DVD's. Get something else, it isent worth the torture.
Re:I've had one for over 3 months and it runs fine, and if you have a liteon burner these things get along great, never had a problem doing a direct cd-cd copy on the fly even with the dvd set at 40x read. Also use it to boot from just fine, no need for a floppy drive. One thing, they are kinda loud but other than that great.
