Major problem in the registry, help! [back ups] [backup registry]

admin / August 27th, 2010/ Posted in Operating Systems / No Comments »

Q: When I started today I got this error message saying windows had an error in my registry and it will restart and repair. So it will reboot and cannot repair as usual and then boots me to a whole new record. So I thought I might start a backup and restore. So I did that and it says error loading the backup of the registry or whatever. The last time this happened to me gave me that error every time I tried to restore backup and finally erased all my good backups and replace the current brand new registry. I didnt make that same mistake this time so Ive left three good backups. My problem is that I know when i try to restore it will give me the error and delete them. I really need to back up the registry installed as i really dont get the time to format and reinstall everything. Any ideas?

EDIT-

Im with Win98 SE

Re:Doesn't Windows store the backups in some folder as I recall? You could boot into dos, find them and make a copy just in case. Can someone verify that they exist? I don't use 9x anymore, so I can't look myself.

Re:Scanreg/opt
compacts the registry .

DOS's Scandisk can sometimes do better . Invoke your Start-up menu
(Toggle F8 or press Ctrl key during bootup), choose Command prompt only (NOT
Safe mode Command prompt), then at the C: prompt , type Scandisk /all & press Enter .
When finished , type win & press Enter .

—————————

To see ALL that is running while in Windows do this:
1. Start scandisk and then PAUSE it.
2. Go to Start – Run – type MSINFO32
3. In the folder tree view click on Software Environment\Running Tasks

You may be surprised at what you find!

To improve on the 5 days MS have on registry backups , use the Cabrest system below & get 14 days .
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/howto/regback1.html

For those that find the above site confusing , here is what to do .

Alter MaxBackupCopies from 5 to 14 as per instructions at above site .

Download the zipped copy of the Batch file from ,
http://www.pcnineoneone.com/downloads/cabrest.zip

Unzip , copy & paste cabrest onto the top of C in Windows Explorer .

Delete zip file , or save it on floppy , if you want it for others or the
future .

Print the instructions below & stick on your comp in front of you , so
when you have to go back to a good copy of the registry , you don't
need to search for them .

————————————

Toggle F8 ( when , verifying DMA pool message comes on ) or Press Ctrl
during bootup .

Select , Command prompt only .

Type in cabrest & press Enter , keep answering y & you will see a
table , which will allow you to select which CAB file to restore from .
So , for example , to restore from rb009 cab , you look at the table &
see 09 corresponds to the letter j . You type j & Not the number .
Follow instructions .

Type win & press Enter to exit .

If after following the instructions to Restore , things arn't still
working , go to an earlier date & try again .

Type win & press Enter to exit .
